Honestly can't see the logic in this. He's waging a drug war. The biggest drug lords in that country are Chinese and the biggest supplier of precursors, as is the case for the rest of the world, is China. No way the Communist Party doesn't know about this. Add to that the South China Sea issue.

It's honestly a mystery what's going on through his head. What he's doing is an absolute contradiction.

You have to wonder if Russia had anything to do with his rise to power

It won't be surprising when someone guns Duarte down, probably organized crime, maybe the military that is tight with the USA, maybe a family of the murdered.

And of course, the CIA is the ready scapegoat.

You got to love Americans. In their presidential debates, they discuss which brown country they are going to bomb next. And in their basketball forums, they discuss which leader of a brown country should be assassinated next and how to cover it up.

That economist article you posted gave some good reasons. Even said he claimed he was molested by an American priest.

This guy says and does idiotic and horrific things, but there's no way he can pull the Phillipine people into the China camp. It's not realistic, but there is value for any leader over there to play both sides rather than unilaterally backing the US and letting corruption rot away everything of value.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Philippine army ousts this guy in a coup. Anyone have any info on his support within the military?

I highly doubt it. Filipino's in general don't rise up against their government no matter how they disagree with it. Hence, the level of corruption that was prevalent prior to Duterte.

Um, you should ask Marcos and Aquino if your statement is correct.

Ask Filipinos how long that took. Also ask me how long I have lived in the Philippines.

What's so surprising? He came to China with hat in hand and knows dictators (have to) buy friendships. U.S. does not shower the Philippines with money so easily.

Not an isolated case by far. You read about the shady **** US military/intel does in other countries all the time. I remember reading about US soldiers raping Philippine women a few years back with the soldier getting a guilty verdict by Philippine courts but getting pulled out of the country by the embassy. Similar situation in Japan. Anywhere with a US base or presence = American enmity.

As I see, the easiest way to get to him is to help him with his war on drugs. Feed him intel on who's supplying most of the drugs (China) and show him it's a state endorsed effort. Then get some CIA guys in there to set him up an anti-drug intel network.

The US is paying a kings ransom for those four bases. The problem is that that money disappears during its slow trickle down to the people. Direct foreign investment from the Chinese would be nice, but the majority of the people would likely view it under the lens of a rich carpet bagging minority exploiting their raw energy and workforce rather than a long term relationship.

Foreign policy isn't something everyday Americans should cheerlead easily. It's a different kind of world, and I don't think the US takes the Phillipines that seriously other than its prime garage space, which is already locked with an immutable treaty signed by dutarte's predecessor.
