How do you think Yao Ming would have fared in today's game?

He played a couple of year ago, it is not like we are talking about Wilt or Russel. The game has not changed that much since Yao played.

That being said, Yao would be similar to Roy Hibbert (at the beginning of last year, not the 0-0 Hibbert) with a great offensive game and a better rebounder.

Excellent post! Sad that we never got to see his full potential due to injuries. Ditto to T-Mac.

 

Yao would have done well were injuries not an issue. Pair him with a stretch 4 and perimeter players who can shoot, and it'd be much harder to double team or front him.

But with Yao we all knew his career would be short. His frame was too much for the NBA grind, and that plus his commitments to the Chinese national team meant he was not long for an NBA career. We got 486 games out of him which is the equivalent of 6 full NBA seasons, averaging 19/9/2 which is pretty darn good even without accounting for all the other ways he impacted a game.

It's been such a long time it's really hard to say.

I don't think he could have hung with the new era of guys in the league but who knows.

When he was healthy he was so big and skilled I can't imagine that he would do any less now than back then. Yes, the game is faster, but it is still about putting the ball through the rim.

 

Yao would have done well in any era. Good luck fronting a 7'6" with skills.

Yao Ming would be the most dominant center in the NBA today barring any physical limitations.


It's not his height or skills that's scary.....it's his heart.

 

They did front him and it was very successful, though that has a lot to do with our (continued) inability to fire off quick entry passes and to swing the ball around and back to the post when entry passes are denied by fronting.

 

Were there even cameras when he played? It was so long ago. Are there videos of him passing?

 

Yao is alive and is 33. I can tell you want he would average in the NBA, nothing because he can't play.

When I saw the headline I thought it was an era question (like how would Russell do in today's game) and thought that was silly since Yao played in the same era.

If I had Dwight's Body, I would average 33/13.5/3.5 in today's game.

 

For the record, Yao was a stud. It's a shame his body couldn't hold up.

 

If he stays healthy (it is a BIG if), I think his stats will be slightly better than Marc Gasol.
