This is from ESPN's recap of the game.

"We had great effort," Karl said. "My big guys battled Yao and got beat up a lot. He's a tough cat, gets away with a lot of holding, grabbing and dislodging. There are losses that are good losses. Tonight was a good loss. We did a lot of things well."

That's the first time I've heard that ever.

yao does his share to get his position and he has every right to do that. other guys are smaller and have to do whatever to defend yao.

depends on the refs to call what they want. shaq learned that b/c he's so big, he's gonna get murdered every time. so why not dish back the punishment?

keep doing yo thing yao. PUNISH THEM.

Unfortunately, the league office (and thus the refs) have taken this position in the past as well.... that what Yao does to get position is a form of "dislodging"...which is why they let the defenders get away with extra contact when trying to prevent him from getting the position.

My argument to this is... why don't the refs simply allow Yao to get position like any other big man gets position in the league? You hardly see this sort of efforts to deny Duncan, Shaq, Amare, or Dwight... and if you do, teams get whistled for it. Yao HAS to bang his man down low... or else he risks being taken out of the game completely (helped in part by the still stupid zone defense rule).

With Yao, however, the refs (and other teams) know that its "game over" if he gets the ball cleanly in the post... and he can easily pass out over traditional double teams... thus they've found a way to somewhat neutralize his god-given advantage that should make him truly unstoppable.

I want Yao to make everybody believe he is dirty. When plays with aggression he is hard to stop. Even with all of the BS calls, he still dropped 31.

Yep - not the first time he's trashed a guy he couldn't get his team to defend well. Also not the first time he's been a complete hypocrite doing so - he accused the Dream of playing zone defense (the now archaic illegal defense violation) when his Sonics were infamous for playing nothing but zone defense for years.

This time? Accusing Yao of holding when Anderson, Hilario, and Martin were latching onto his arm with a kung fu grip each and every possession.

Karl has never been gracious in defeat. His team blew multiple chances to put us away.
