Houston - A representative of former Houston Rockets center Yao Ming informed the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Wednesday that Yao feels it is premature for him to be on the ballot for the Hall of Fame in 2012.

"Yao believes it is inappropriate for him to be considered for induction to the Hall of Fame at this time," said John Huizinga, Yao's agent, in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.

Yao, who retired last month because of injuries, was nominated for the Hall of Fame as a contributor by a member of the Chinese media.

Anyone who is nominated as a contributor is immediately eligible for the Hall of Fame.

For Yao to be voted in as a player, he has to wait a minimum of five years.

Yao was taken by the Rockets with the first-overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft.

He played his entire career with Houston and was named to the NBA All-Star team eight times.

    Good move on his part.

If he's inducted next year, inevitably people will ask how he can be inducted immediately while a player like Michael Jordan (who's global impact, I imagine, was no less substantial) had to wait several years.

Regardless of whether he should or not, this is him being humble, which I have respect for.

I don't think Kobe, Lebron, or D-Rose would have quite the same attitude. :p

But Yao isn't going in for his play on the court. He's going in for his impact on the "game". Contributer to the game of basketball in terms of International exposure.

Yao in the HOF has little to do with him as a basketball player on the court.

So because Jordan was the greatest player of all time in addition to having an unprecedented global impact on the game, he had to wait 5 years to be inducted? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Exactly. Yao is the walking, talking definition of class, as this statement from him makes so clear. He knew it was too early, as did many of his fans, so Yao did the right thing. Again. And who knows? Perhaps a miracle will occur in a couple of years and we'll see him suit up again for the Rockets. Very unlikely, but not impossible. Maybe that thought was in the back of his mind. Only Yao knows, and he ain't tellin'.

Exactly again. His humility shouldn't surprise anyone.

durvasa, spare us the Jordan GOAT crap. If Dream had allowed a statue of himself outside TC it should have been similar to MJ's, in that it should have MJ in it with Dream stuffing his butt to the floor.

If someone wants to nominate Jordan as a contributor in addition to his inclusino as a player, I'd have no problem with that. The only reason Jordan "had to wait" is because no one thought to nominate him on that basis.

As for Yao, I find this humility to be a bit tiresome. Sometimes it's better to just say "Thank you" instead of "No, I don't deserve it" when someone pays you a compliment. Probably the Chinese writer made the nomination knowing that Yao would demur.
