In the preseason of his rookie year, he actually did wear "Ming" on the back of his jersey until he stated that "Yao" is more appropriate to be placed on the back. It was "Yao" when the regular season started, however.

 

Yeah I was gonna say, I thought it said Ming - or Yao Ming - for a game or two.

 

Don't think he wore this in the games, pretty sure "13 in 33" is correct on it saying just "MING" in the preseason before the correction.

 

Would have been the Spurs or Sixers games in '02. He sat out this game, his first upon arrival, but based on this shot from the game, maybe the "MING" thing is wrong.

 

This is what happens when you try to directly translate a Chinese name into American name. They are structured differently..

In asian culture, I think the last name is in front of the first name. The last name isn't considered a last name but a family name.

Yea, in asian countries like Japan, China, and I believe Korea as well its family name first then your own name. Its like family before yourself thing in Asia thats why family name comes first.
