I'm a Democrat and I disagree with a wealth tax. You should only have to pay tax on income once - when you realize it. I don't think illiquid assets such as private stock should be taxed.

 

I don't believe in giving billionaires billions in tax breaks either.

 

It's not tax breaks but deference on taxes until a gain is realized. If I start a company and it becomes worth billions, I may only take a salary of $100k per year. I'm not getting a tax break but rather not paying taxes on my equity until I realize the gain.

There's a good reason for this - and that is a lot of entrepreneurs don't have a lot of cash until their company IPO's or is bought. All their wealth is in paper - which isn't liquid. You may have a net worth of a billion, but have hardly any cash. If you get a $100 million tax bill, how are you going to pay it?

 

What about consumption tax vs income tax?
