At least it's not comparisons to the MLB, a league without a salary cap, but comparisons to the NBA are pretty stupid for what should be obvious reasons.

This is basically what happened with Andre all over again.

 

That didn't end so well.

 

What the Patriots would have done is traded him before this situation occurred. You don't break the bank for a WR, it's a stupid move. It may help improve their chances this season, but it's going to make sustained success more difficult.

 

Was hoping the team would call his bluff for the season.

 

Much different circumstance. Andre eventually got released due to a decline in production and being unwilling to take a lesser role.

 

Yeah and antagonize your best offensive player. So if Brock struggles you've given Hopkins a reason to start publicly b****ing about the quarterback situation, on top of the fact the GM gets extended, and to point out every NFL player who has gotten extended before him. This thing could spiral to an ugly situation if Rick doesn't get a handle on it and pay a guy who deserves it.

And why not pay your elite young receiver. That makes no sense.

 

Yeah that's better than caving and then facing this same scenario 3 years into the contract of every productive or semi-productive player....

Every productive player is not a top 5 player at his position in the NFL. When you have one you pay them, period. This thing should have never gotten this far. Don't know why in the world you'd want trade the guy. You hang on to top players if you want to win.

You are nuts. Without him you are depending on rookie WRs to produce and historically, rookie WRs don't produce to Hopkins's level. Trading Hopkins with what the Texans have at WR &TE would be giving up on this season.

How many seasons has Hopkins been a top 5 wideout again? I really don't know. I assumed with JJ, this was easy for the team because of his consistency.

 

Who are the 10 highest paid WRs right now?

 

He's the youngest receiver in the top 5. He's arguably top 3. He's the most skilled receiver in the game. The receivers that are ahead of him are just physical freaks(Julio Jones). You don't refuse to pay or trade away a top 5 player at his position who is also 24 and hasn't even hit his prime yet. The receivers that are ahead of.him currently are in the smack dab middle of their primes. They are either going to stay at the same level for the next few years or slowly start regressing. I doubt they are going to elevelate their game even more. Hopkins still is improving year to year.

The receiver with the most similar trajectory and age is OBJ and Giants fans would riot if they refuse to pay him or trade him.

OBJ and Hopkins are going to be the two best receivers in the league after Jones and Brown start regressing past their prime.

Also, Hopkins is exactly the type of receiver who's designed to have a LONG career due to him relying on his ball skills rather than out right athleticism unlike AJ who regressed severely once he lost his freak athleticism.

 

It was obviously to send a message and get it out to the media. Good move on his part stirring media and getting right back in camp. Can't be any worse than the Denver donkey fiasco.
