Yao, T-Mac among early All-Star voting leaders
Garnett the fan favorite early; 'King James' second overall

NEW YORK — Even with the Rockets struggling to keep pace in their division, Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady are among the top vote-getters in the Western Conference for the 2008 NBA All-Star game.

Celtics forward Kevin Garnett was the leading vote-getter with 1,186,690 votes when the second set of returns were released Thursday. Celtics forward Paul Pierce and guard Ray Allen were fourth at their positions in the Eastern Conference.

Boston acquired Garnett, a 10-time All-Star, from Minnesota and Allen, a seven-time All-Star, from Seattle in the offseason.

Cavaliers star LeBron James, the leading vote-getter last year, had the second-highest total in the NBA with 1,005,733 votes. Guards Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat and Jason Kidd of the New Jersey Nets, and Orlando center Dwight Howard also were in position to start for the East in the Feb. 11 game in New Orleans.

Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was the leading Western Conference vote-getter with 941,716, followed by Yao (813,305) and Denver forward Carmelo Anthony (767,722). Spurs forward Tim Duncan also was among the West leaders.

Bryant had 31 points, six assists and six steals to lead the West to a 153-132 victory over the East in last year's game in Las Vegas, winning his second All-Star MVP award.

Voting will continue through Jan. 20 and the All-Star starters will be announced on Jan. 24.

yao was adding Ls and sowhat? It's the allstar game and Yao is the most decent one among the western centers, by decent I mean looking ,skills and stats.

We had rafer and Yao is still averaging 20+10 ,and think about what Amare would be like without nash?

As for Kaman , u dont really want your courtside kids watch the entire game and have nighmare the whole night....

and Tracy.....dont know why he is in.....but still ,he is right now a rocket...show some love, u people

The East is rising, and fast. Yao's popularity seems to be steadliy declining. He does deserve to be in the All-star game though. There's really nobody else in the West except Kaman. I mean they have Eric Dampier on the ballot for cying out loud.

Kaman should get the nod in a couple of years.

    LOL.

McGrady got his votes on the shoulder of Yao!

Without those Chinese fans voting for Yao and also him (by convenience or familiarity), he would have fallen off the list for sure.

If he were traded again out of Houston, he won't get those votes, and he would most likely not be a all star any more ...

    LOL again ... :)))))))))))))))))))

Just like Yao, Yi Jianlian of Milwankee Bucks will have more votes than any others in his position in Eastern Conference next year for all star game. And watch out, his teamate Michael Redd will be an all star too (he would never have a chance if he is not teamate of Yi), ....... ;)

seriously, they make it fan voting for a reason....you dont choose based on how good that player makes their team...its about exciting, highlights that you dont normally see in games...tracy mcgrady brings that?...when he doesnt have that serious game situation on him, you have to admit he looks pretty damn good in all star games, windmill dunks etc..

anyone got a tip for the dunk contest entrees?

Please dont vote for tmac. He does not deserve it. He also doesn't want to be in the all star game because of lack of security. Screw him.

For the nth time, it's called fan voting. You may vote otherwise, but you can't claim who deserve/don't deserve the spot. The players get more vote deserve to be on the all star team, that's the rule. It's a frigging show, and those fans who voted them want to see them. If you don't, you don't have to. To act like Barkley, to claim you have more basketball knowledge or more sense or more whatever, doesn't make your vote weigh more than the next guy.

If you don't like the voting system, boycott it; if you don't like other people's choices, go on to cast your own vote; if you don't like the result, just don't watch it. But it doesn't make you a better fan, or others less fan.

Is it that hard to understand for those of you "debating" the same old "deserving or not" crap over and over every single year?

How many Chinese have you asked? What makes you THINK Chinese must vote Yao and TMac? Aren't all Chinese YOFs and TOHs, then why would they vote for TMac? Why Chinese only? TMac can't get non-Chinese votes? Or you are saying, Kaman or Erika should be the real "deserving" starter, if it's not for Chinese fans?

    LOL again ...

I absolutely agree! It's so freakin' annoying that there are people out there that just equate Yao's votes to the 1.3 billion people in China. It's also a disservice to Yao's talent and great work ethic.

Is it so hard to fathom that global NBA fans vote Yao and Tracy because they like them? And maybe it's possible a majority of fans in China are saavy enough about basketball that they would root and vote for the players they like, and not just live and die Yao Ming like certain individuals on this bbs.

Hey, I didn't say TMac can't get non-Chinese votes, you have a problem of understanding what's being said. I implied Chinese votes made a big difference to TMac that they took him over the hump.

How did I know it? Well, ask yourself, how many non-Chinese have you asked about how they have voted? It's a stupid question. We certainly can not go out to ask each everyone, but we all can make intelligent guesses based on what we read and heard.

The voting power of those Chinese fans is evidenced upon Yao Ming, and it will show again next upon Yi, wait and see.

    LOL again ...

Well, I didn't say the Chinese/International fans were blind and vote without sense. Certainly the player has to play pretty good, in Yao's case, that's not a problem, then the fan's votes could take him to a level many people here just could not and would not like to take ... (what! more than King - James! What the ...) ... Well, calm down
