SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER Friday, January 28, 2005 ¡¤ Last updated 6:12 a.m. PT Cheney's green parka and boots stand out THE ASSOCIATED PRESS OSWIECIM, Poland -- Vice President Dick Cheney's utilitarian hooded parka and boots stood out amid the solemn formality of a ceremony commemorating the liberation of Nazi death camps, raising eyebrows among the fashion-conscious. Cheney replaced the zipped-to-the-neck green parka he sported in Thursday's blowing snow and freezing wind with a more traditional black coat - red tie and gray scarf showing underneath - for his tour of Auschwitz on Friday. Washington Post fashion writer Robin Givhan described Cheney's look at the deeply moving 60th anniversary service as "the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower." "Cheney stood out in a sea of black-coated world leaders because he was wearing an olive drab parka with a fur-trimmed hood," Givhan wrote in Friday's Post, also mocking Cheney's knit ski cap embroidered with the words "Staff 2001" and his brown, lace-up hiking boots. "The vice president looked like an awkward child amid the well-dressed adults," she said. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/printer/ap.asp?category=1103&slug=Cheney Parka
Geez, is this really a story? Slow news day. I smell an episode of Queer Eye for the Vice President in the works.
let's see, the press is discussing fashion faux-pas at such a solemn occasion, and they're accusing cheney of not being serious? you can NOT be serious!
RMT, I LOVE taking shots at Cheney and the Boyz as much as anyone...but really, should we care if he has a parka on instead of a black trench coat?
Cheney Criticized for Attire at Auschwitz Ceremony 2 hours, 23 minutes ago WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) raised eyebrows on Friday for wearing an olive-drab parka, hiking boots and knit ski cap to represent the United States at a solemn ceremony remembering the liberation of Auschwitz. AP Photo Related Links • Dick Cheney, Dressing Down (Washington Post) Other leaders at the event in Poland on Thursday marking the 60th anniversary of the death camp's liberation, such as French President Jacques Chirac and Russian President Vladimir Putin (news - web sites), wore dark, formal overcoats and dress shoes or boots. "The vice president, however, was dressed in the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower," Robin Givhan, The Washington Post's fashion writer, wrote in the newspaper's Friday editions. Between the somber, dark-coated leaders at the outdoor ceremony sat Cheney, resplendent in a green parka embroidered with his name and featuring a fur-trimmed hood, the laced brown boots and a knit ski cap reading "Staff 2001." "And, indeed, the vice president looked like an awkward boy amid the well-dressed adults," Givhan wrote. Britain's Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph newspapers also both noted that Cheney had opted for casual attire. The Post's Givhan said Cheney might have been hoping to avoid the cold weather in Oswiecim, but noted he had worn a dark overcoat and no hat at all at another recent winter occasion -- his own swearing-in ceremony on Inauguration Day on Jan. 20 in snow-dusted Washington. "The vice president might have been warm in his parka, ski cap and hiking boots," Givhan said. "But they had the unfortunate effect of suggesting he was more concerned with his own comfort than the reason for braving the cold at all." Cheney's staff had no comment on the story. http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=sto...128/pl_nm/holocaust_cheney_dress_dc&printer=1 It seems people are take it seriously.
I don't think anybody really cares; the original story was by the Washington Post Fashion writer, so I guess it falls within her job description. The AP obviously turned it into a wire item, but then, they turn all kinds of meaningless crap into wire items, like 16 pound babies and stuff.
Green is the color of Islam. Cheney was making a stament tying the Jewish victims of Nazi fascism with the Islamic victims of Baathist facism where America was the rescuer of both. It's a secret Masonic message of one world government.
Nobody's joking about him being underdressed for a party. It's Auschwitz and he's the Vice President. If you saw somebody dressed like that at a funeral, you'd talk about it. Since Cheney isn't just some dude, it makes the papers. It's not even in the front page. It's just news. The people who are making a bigger deal are the ones who are bashing the fact that it's being reported.
Considering he's probably about to keel over from his various ailments, he may have needed more protection from the cold than some of those other guys.
This really seems like non-story to me. It ranks up there with the GOP going after Kerry's wife, middle name, French appearance, Gore's sweating, Dean's Yeeeeeeaarrrgh, and all of the other things that weren't news worthy that they made such big issues out of. The GOP supporters shouldn't be surprised since they seem to live in the world of sensationalizing the trivial and inconsequential, but the libs who would think that that world isn't a good place to live shouldn't harp on this either, IMO.
When my Dad's ticker was giving out he'd sit in front of an electric heater with a wrap on at about 65 degrees. I'm just glad Dick wasn't rootin for the horns at the same time.
I honestly do not understand how he is out of place ~ he's in Poland during the winter. Why is this a big deal? _____________________ However I must admit this paragraph cracks me up: Between the somber, dark-coated leaders at the outdoor ceremony sat Cheney, resplendent in a green parka embroidered with his name and featuring a fur-trimmed hood, the laced brown boots and a knit ski cap reading "Staff 2001." He really only needed an 'All Access' badge to complete the look.
