Bobcats can add by losing Bogans
Charlotte trades guard, gains forward BaxterRICK BONNELLrbonnell@charlotteobserver.com

Think of Thursday's Charlotte Bobcats trade as an effort at housekeeping.
The Bobcats traded shooting guard Keith Bogans to the Houston Rockets for power forward Lonny Baxter. The move addressed an overload at shooting guard and acquired quick help inside, where injuries have plagued them.
Bickerstaff said this deal would neither save nor scuttle either team's season.
"It's not anything that gets us over the hump,'' Bickerstaff said, "just like (losing) Bogans is not going to take anything under.''
Bogans was probably the Bobcats' most rugged perimeter defender. But with Raymond Felton, Kareem Rush, Matt Carroll and Alan Anderson also playing the position, minutes were spread thin. Bogans was coming back from a sprained knee and, according to Bickerstaff, he wanted a trade to a team where he could play more.
Baxter, a former Maryland center, figures to play immediately. The Bobcats need rebounding with Emeka Okafor and Gerald Wallace out with injuries. He averaged 3.6 points and 3.7 rebounds with the Rockets
The Bobcats will be Baxter's sixth NBA team in seven seasons. His best performance this season was Jan. 25 against the Bobcats -- 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 11 rebounds.
Baxter's minutes have dropped of late, with Houston center Yao Ming returning from foot surgery. What's his best asset at the pro level?
"Definitely, offensive rebounding,'' said Baxter (6-8 and 260 pounds). "I crash the boards.''
Baxter could have been a Bobcat in the summer of 2004, after they chose him in the expansion draft. But the Bobcats had an abundance of healthy big men at the time, and didn't sign Baxter, then a free agent.
Bickerstaff said Baxter's agents called the Bobcats last summer, looking to place Baxter here, but nothing came of it. Under current circumstances, Bickerstaff needs all the size he can round up.
"Big bodies take up space, and often that's what this (game) is all about -- creating space with the basketball,'' Bickerstaff said.
It was also about balancing the roster. The Bobcats were overloaded at shooting guard to a point that Bickerstaff couldn't keep everyone happy. Starter Raymond Felton deserves 30 minutes a night, the coach said, and it became unmanageable to spread the rest of the playing time among Rush, Bogans, Carroll and Anderson.
What do the Bobcats lose in Bogans?
"Toughness,'' Bickerstaff said. "But we've got a young kid who can play that way, too, in Alan Anderson.''
This was Bickerstaff's 11th trade in the Bobcats' 11/2 seasons of existence, and he indicated he isn't done making calls leading up to the Feb. 23 deadline.
"This could be a prelude to some other things,'' he concluded.
    TRADE BREAKDOWN
What the Bobcats lost: Keith Bogans, a rugged perimeter defender. He was the guy they would sic on a Tracy McGrady or Kobe Bryant to try to contain a wing scorer.
What they received: Lonny Baxter, a wide-body to play inside at a time when injuries to Emeka Okafor and Gerald Wallace make them thin under the basket.
Conclusion: The Bobcats had too many shooting guards and not enough big men. The trade helps balance the rotation.

Well normally I'd expect that, but reading this article, it seems unusually objective to me. I mean, come on... the guy flat-out admits that Bogans was their toughest perimeter defender. What else could ya ask for?

IF Bogans is the "rugged perimeter defeder" that they claim, then all he has to do is knock down the open shot and play the defense they claim he plays, and he shoudl be able to get significant minutes.

BEst case scenario: we got us a decent shooting swingman with size and defensive capabilities

Both teams win with the trade because they give up players who aren't needed and gain players who will hopefully crack their rotation. Baxter's career game against the Bobcats may have helped this trade go down.

I also think the article was very objective.

Hmmm... we need Moochie to have a career game against the Knicks. Isaiah will pull something off such as Frye + Ariza + David Lee for Moochie.

So you're saying best case scenario is that he turns out to be our Bruce Bowen?

I would take that in a heartbeat :)

Although it may be too late this year (hopefully not) I think this trade is a good deal. we finally have that YOUNG, long swingman we have coveted, and he may just step it up a notch. If his shot comes around....maybe, and young Bruce Bowen? :D

i always wonder why we traded cuttino? that big o' trade was basically t-mac for francis and cuttino for howard. why couldn't they see that cuttino played very good defense against kobe in that first round playoffs. and he's also one of the best sharp shooters. we wouldn't be having talks about getting this gaurd that gaurd if he were still here.

    swift or some other pf

You gotta do what you gotta do.

If the Magic requested Cat, would you have nixed the trade altogether if you were the Rockets? I'm sure the Rockets did the best deal they could and I think they did a great job.

The only question I have is, aren't both DA and Jon healthy? So why make the trade?

we made the trade cause DA has requested a trade. and Barry is so old we need more depth behind him.

Would you trade Wesley and DA to the knicks for Crawford?

    Houston Trade Breakdown
    Outgoing

    Derek Anderson
    6-5 SG from Kentucky
    10.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.6 apg in 29.1 minutes

    David Wesley
    6-1 SG from Baylor
    10.8 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.1 apg in 35.5 minutes
    Incoming

    Jamal Crawford
    6-5 SG from Michigan
    14.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.9 apg in 33.1 minutes
Change in team outlook: -7.6 ppg, -3.7 rpg, and -1.8 apg.

    New York Trade Breakdown
    Outgoing

    Jamal Crawford
    6-5 SG from Michigan
    14.0 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.9 apg in 33.1 minutes
    Incoming

    Derek Anderson
    6-5 SG from Kentucky
    10.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.6 apg in 29.1 minutes

    David Wesley
    6-1 SG from Baylor
    10.8 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.1 apg in 35.5 minutes
Change in team outlook: +7.6 ppg, +3.7 rpg, and +1.8 apg.

    Successful Scenario
Due to Houston and New York being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. Houston and New York had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
