not bad...would help if JR Smith was a capable starter and move afalo to the bench. That way Smith help wallace with the scoring load.

True story: I was in a gym in Baltimore recently shooting around with some of the older guys, and they were saying that Melo still comes back from time to time to prove he is the best. He honestly dropped 71 points in a pick up game at that gym. But, everyone wanted to instill upon me that he has always hated playing defense.

i dont see how melo is foolish when yao is never healthy.... rockets have no chance at a title without yao.... also, the moves morey has made havent been all that great seeing as how the rockets have played like ass and gotten further and further away from the great defensive team we used to be. melo should consider dallas, but not houston TBH

So Melo dropped 10 less points in a pickup game than Kobe dropped against NBA talent?

That's nothing but media talk... If LaLa was making the decisions they would have gotten married after being engaged a couple weeks instead of 5 years.

The Rockets would refuse, unless Melo signs an extension.

Throw in a couple draft picks and maybe change out Jeffries for Brooks and then morph it into a bigger deal where we take back another contract from Denver to get them out of the luxury tax and then we also take Billups' contract off their hand for other contracts, you may have a deal.

There have been "gentlemen agreements" before. One example may be Richard Jefferson opting out of his contract last season. Everybody thought he was stupid to do it. The only reasoning behind it was an agreement from Pop to re-sign him to a longer term deal at agreed to money after the Spurs had made moves. There have been many other type agreements, maybe not of this particular nature but of the nature of getting a player to agree to a smaller contract with a promise to re-up at a preset figure once the team achieved his Bird's rights, etc. It's not illegal unless they are paying a player under the table to sign or not to sign with them or some other team.

It's not a bad deal -- obviously we'd have to give up a draft pick as well.

Nitpicking it, the problem I see from Denver's standpoint is that it keeps them just competitive enough to keep them out of a high lottery pick/the lottery. With no real game changers on their roster, the Nuggets would be a team of second and third tier stars who probably wouldn't be good enough to seriously contend.

Of course, one of your points was that Melo says no to New Jersey so the Favors deal is dead.. is there a better deal out there?

If you were Denver, and thinking about your long-term future and building around Lawson and Nene.. would you rather have Wallace/Scola or Galinari, Chandler and 1st? Talent wise, Scola/Wallace no contest.. but when you factor in the money involved and the desire to rebuild with young talent with high ceilings, NY's deal might look more tempting. I'm not sure -- it depends on what their front office is thinking.

Right -- but none of those scenarios involved a third team. It was a, "hey, opt out and we'll resign you." Not a "hey, re-sign with us and if you don't like it, we'll trade you anywhere you want!"

What if Carmelo agrees, signs the extension, and then Galinari & Chandler both sustain major injuries. Carmelo liked the Mexican food here but prefers the bright lights of MSG more and wants out -- no way we still do that deal. What recourse does Carmelo have? None.. I can't see him agreeing to this type of deal.

Come on now...that's like saying Rockets could never win a championship w/o Ralph Sampson... Players come and players go all the time. Rockets have been preparing for life w/o Yao for a couple of years now... And Morey has created a team full of assets out of almost nothing. If we had a superstar that DM can build around, we will be a very good team with the supposing cast we have and could get.

    With or without Yao...

That's part of the risk. The trade terms would have to be somewhat predefined somehow and everybody would have to be willing to take the risk. What if Melo signs the extension and then has a stress fracture, microfracture, and they have to amputate his leg? Those are all risks that teams have to take. Melo has to take the risk that the Rox will be true to their word. No, it's probably never happened just like this before. But the fact is, most superstar transactions are unique. Melo's will be as well.

I'm not saying this is going to happen. Frankly, I think Melo winds up in New York or NY at the trade deadline with his extension signed. But there are a lot of moving parts. Melo, Denver, the CBA, the extension, and all the other teams wanting to deal. It is a truly interesting and unique situation.

Even after moving our 2012 pick for TWill, when you look at our draft pick assets, they are superior to New Jersey's.

The question really is how badly does Denver want to maximize value for Melo. If they really want to maximize value, Scola and Brooks can be converted to assets that represent more value than Favors. Unless somehow Denver thinks that Favors is going to be a top 5 player. When you combine those values with the fact that we can singlehandedly take Denver out of the luxury tax, while NJ cannot, it does make you wonder why Denver wouldn't consider Houston. I know they don't want Melo to wind up in the West beating them. But do they want the best chance to win themselves or do they just want to prevent somebody else from winning with Melo?

Go study the draft picks that are available from us and from New Jersey. And see if you don't come to the conclusion that it comes down to whether Denver wants Favors or whether they want Jordan Hill, Scola, and whatever they can get for Brooks. Denver, with our talent, could conceivably wind up with a lineup of Scola, Hill, Gerald Wallace in the frontcourt, plus Lawson in the backcourt, and the Knicks lottery pick in 2011 and our pick in 2012 plus the Clips 2nd rounder, and be under the luxury tax besides. (This is making the assumption that you could send Brooks and Jeffries to Charlotte for Wallace. Brooks and Jeffries should be able to net the equivalent of a Gerald Wallace since Charlotte is a lottery team looking to start over.)

The bottom line is does Denver really think Favors is a better value to helping them rebuild then the combination of talent they could get by going through Houston.

Only thing he would ruin is our team's chances at a lotto pick.

I still think that people, specially the media, overate the "Denver will rebuild/go young" after the Melo era.

The ONLY guy that is quite young, is Lawson 23y, other then that, they have a couple talented 25 year old players, but we can resume it to just Lawson.

Let´s be clear, the best rebuilding package for Denver, is the Favors plus 10 1st round draft picks, probably all of them will be 10+ draft picks, but nonetheless they can bring good/great (less likely) players, but for me Favors will not be a franchise player people say he will. This package is not "real", unless Melo accepts a contract extension (not likely), so this offer is non existent.

Now let´s go to the NYK "possible package". Draft pick has a very low value, it will probably be 25+ 1st round pick. Galinari is a very good shooter, but is one of those guys that you like having when there are superstars around, because they get all the attention, and you get wide open shots, and defensively, he is too soft to play the 4, and slow to play the 3, and this is a weakness that he will get better at, but it will never disappear. Wilson Chandler, is a guy that I like, because he has improved his shooting, selection and %, he plays good D, but he will never be a superstar. Both are talented, Chandler is a better player, both are playing in a system that overvalues them, non will be stars.

My point is that, in this NYK package, there are no POTENTIAL (this is always questionable because it is my opinion) stars. And by the way, a starting 5 of: Nene, Galinari, Chandler, Affalo, Lawson, would not be bad enough to get you a top 5 pick.

This is all speculation on my part, but the thing is I don´t understand why so many articles, and specialist talking about going young, when they have talented vets, and very few young studs, Nene will be there this year and the next one with a 10M+ contract, Billups will be there too for the same amount of time with a 10M+ contract, they have Birdman for 4 more years, this offseason they signed Al Harrigton, for 5 years (6,5 Millions per), when they already knew that re-signing Melo would be very difficult.

I don´t see them going young, I should re-phrase it, I see them possibly going young, but I also see them collecting assets and continue to be a playoff team, and when time arrives, try and go for a big fish (like the Rockets are apparently doing), and IMO, that very simple trade I posted (if it happens it will not be THAT easy) have talented enough players going for Denver for them to pull the trigger.

Sorry for posting too much on this thread, but this is what happens, when people start realizing how much overrated the "go young argument" is, what is more valuable D. Favors or D Howard??? B.Griffin or Amare??? (rhetorical questions)
