It's simple, we need to take the mid range shot when teams lock down the paint and 3pters. I know they aren't as efficient and I know someone will say a thread is already somewhere probably about this but watching this game has just pissed me off to another level. The team needs to heed some knowledge and listen to Calvin.

I saw Conley, Gasol, Kufos, and Lee make open midrange jumpers a two steps behind the FT line play after play. Inside outside game is great (you still need effective midrange) but you need a great post player and great 3 pt shooters. The rockets don't have either and still have NO midrange game.

Hell, Jordan won 3 championships in the post/mid range. Bench isn't helping us but that would be another thread.

The TNT crew have been saying that the team needs to run PnR in the mid range area to set up the short shot and to better set up Howard. The team needs shot diversity.

If would could defend at an elite level maybe we could do it, but we don't and most likely can't.

We'll none of our big guys are capable of hitting it consistently, so no.

For the record I know he has 6 but the last 3 he was older and depended more on the mid range/post

What do you propose, then? Our 3pt percentage does not justify taking so many threes per game. The Rockets are one of the worst teams in the league in terms of 3pt percentage.
I love Daryl Morey, but unless we can somehow acquire a 3pt specialist or we magically improve from beyond the arc, the "No midrange" strategy will fail.

Morey's problem is he thinks we can develop our guys into deadeye 3pt shooters. Sometimes you just have it, and sometimes you don't. Our team is capable of being great mid-range shooters, who once they get into a rhythm after making shots, ARE capable of hitting 3pters. But you can't just expect them to do that repetitively and consistently out of the gate if its not in their nature.

We need somebody who is actually good at knocking down these shots. The team took then tonight, mostly missed.

The problem isn't that we're not shooting mid-rangers.

The problem isn't the philosophy of shooting plenty of threes and driving to the basket.

The problem is we don't have enough players that can do both.

James Harden and Chandler Parsons are the only players on the roster that can consistently do both, and even they are prone to having off games when the defense focuses on them.

Jeremy Lin has shown flashes of doing both but isn't remotely consistent nor reliable.

We don't have a power forward that can come close to doing both. We don't have anyone else off the bench that can do both. Brooks is the closest but he can't guard anyone and McHale is scared to use him because of that.

They need to practice it. I refuse to believe we got a bunch of guys that can hit 3's but not a shorter ranged 2.

Problem is not the lack of mid-range.

The problem is the talent level. They can't overcome good defensive teams. And they can't defend either.

I'm really disappointed in Harden and Howard's disappearing acts.

We didn't have many shots available tonight anywhere. This offense grinds to a halt when we face a really great paint defense and we become a jumpshooting team which, frankly, we aren't good at even when we're open. It doesn't matter whether the shots are twos or threes, we can't make them.

Morey is not opposed to the midrange jumper. Who on this team can shoot anywhere close to even 50%?

We have shooters...but not 3 point shooters...

    There is a diff. Pierce is a shooter...Harden is a shooter...Korver is a 3 point shooter...Thompson is a 3 point shooter...

You don't take a cumulative FG% in this case. There are sweet spots on the floor that players can hit at an extremely high clip when they are open. Its almost like a FT for them at that point. You have to runs plays for that open shot though.

The premise of the 3-ball and lay-up strategy is correct. The most refined form of this strategy is the D'Antoni offense which has revolutionised the game and has found adepts in the Heat and Spurs. The Rockets fail to achieve the goals of the D'Antoni offense (or that of any offense based on floor spacing) because of mainly four reasons:
    (1) This type of offense is predicated on quick ball movement and sharing. Harden and Howard are ball stoppers: they take too much time in making their move be it at the top of the key or in the post hence letting the opposing D to set up correctly and often creating inadvertent ISO situations. Also, for whatever reasons, the Rockets are not pushing up the pace in transition, hence facing increasingly more set defenses.
    (2) Nearly non-existent off the ball movement and lack of aggresive screening, meaning that open shots are at a premium.
    (3) Lack of flexibility in shot selection. The crux of the D'Antoni offense is mainly concerned with getting your team mates open to jack up any shots, not just 3-pointers.
    (4) Lack of a legit stretch four to actually create floor spacing and unclog the paint, a clear Morey fail.
