At least two explosions rocked the check-in zone of Brussels Airport Tuesday, killing and wounding "several" people, an official said.

The blasts shook the departures hall shortly after 8 a.m. local time (3 a.m. ET).

Pictures from the scene showed bloodied victims, shattered glass and debris as well smoke pouring from the terminal and passengers fleeing the airport area with their bags.

"There was an explosion … there are several dead and wounded but we can't say how many at this point," a federal police spokesman said.

"There was an explosion … there are several dead and wounded but we can't say how many at this point," a federal police spokesman said.

A security source told NBC News the explosion happened near check-in desk four in Departure Hall 1, which is used by international carriers including American Airlines.

"There were wounded everywhere," a witness told TV channel RTL. A baggage worker, who gave his name as Dirk, told the channel. "Everything is stopped. It is without doubt an attack."

It comes amid a flurry of counterterrorism activity in the Belgian capital. A raid this week in Brussels captured Europe's most wanted man — Salah Abdeslam, suspected Paris terror attacks plotter and aborted suicide attacker.

Abdeslam was taken into custody along with several others. His capture has been seen as a potential goldmine of information for intelligence services — if he cooperates.

The 26-year-old and several of the attackers who laid siege to Paris on Nov. 13 had ties to Belgium.

On Monday, officials named another potential suspect and asked for public assistance in locating him.

Roads and public transportation leading to the airport was closed off and incoming flights were diverted.

Belgium's foreign minister said following Abdeslam's arrest that the suspect had been planning to "restart something" in Brussels — the suggestion of a new attack that was taken all the more seriously given the large amounts of heavy weapons found during his arrest.

Of course, this has nothing to do with Islam .

Israel has been dealing with this same crap for decades. The problem is that now, enough fanatical followers of the death cult are everywhere. I predict a lot more of this stuff all over Europe, including London, where I expect some major attacks very soon.

Attacks at the airport are reported suicide bombings.
There are now reported explosions in four different metro stations.

It seems like it is more of an Arab phenomenon.

What about the suicide bombings and murderous attacks in Bali, Jakarta, Nigeria, Ivory Coast (just last week), Turkey (not Arabs), etc. etc. etc.?

ban muslims may not be a bad idea after all. if they can't come in, they can't blow themselves up. it's that simple. the hard part is how do you know if someone is muslim.

I'm - scheduled to be - going to Paris and London in next few weeks.

    Including travelling on EuroStar.

Pretty much thinking about cancelling right now. Am I crazy?

This is meant to be a once in a lifetime holiday for me and my Dad.

I took the EuroStar yesterday. Don't cancel. As you know, Islamist terror could happen in Australia, so it's not a reason not to do what you want to do and not to go where you want to go.

Paris and London is extremely bad timing, I'd rather go for other countries or non-capital cities. People will of course say that the chances of falling victim to a terrorist attack is near zero, but there are certainly less risky places to go (I'd argue that Brussels, Paris and London are THE targets for terrorist attacks right now, pretty much every other place in Europe is safer).

That's true I suppose. We often feel pretty segregated as Australians from what goes on in far flung countries.

But, given I'm in Sydney especially,it's not the reality anymore.

Our trip is planned to a T. It's too soon to reshuffle everything

Hotels, tours etc. All locked in.

I see what you're saying though.

Might see what the insurance can do.

Stop spreading your biased hatred of Islam, it doesn't help. These suicide bombers are not following any doctrine, they are told a line here and there from a book to justify (revenge) attacks for years of bombardments by 'Western' nations in the Middle-East.

These terrorists attacks are happening now too frequently.

Straight out of the scenes of "24".

    That's unfortunate.

I agree with ATW in the regards to the possibility being everywhere, that it's extremely unlikely to happen and I get that sentiment to not let these things influence you. In 9999/10000 cases nothing will happen, but personally, I'd always want to reduce risk to a minimum and go to places where I really feel safe and where there's no immediate threat.

If that trip really is a lifetime dream, it'd probably be better to not cancel and just trying to enjoy it.

Update: Only the attack at the airport and one metro station have been confirmed, other reported attacks apparently not true.
