And MSFT is down 4.5% just like that, while the NASDAQ is up 1.5%.

This is probably all part of their master plan.

Send elop to nokia, keep company afloat for a while and get the windows phone name out..force ballmer to retire..and buy nokia/bring elop back.

Maybe we'll get to see some commercials soon of people dancing with Nokia phones?

    FIFY.

This is a move of desperation by MS. They had an ideal relationship with Nokia because of Elop. The only reason this is happening is to keep Nokia away from Android (or maybe to keep Nokia from going out of business). Microsoft couldn't afford for the maker of nearly all windows phones to fail or switch directions. This is a move based on fear, not strength.

Maybe MS needs to give up on trying to be everything to everybody and narrow their focus. Maybe sell Bing to Yahoo, give up on Windows Phone and focus on products and services that are successful at generating profits. Over the next couple of days, I want to hear some independent analysts spin this acquisition positively.

I bet MS names a new CEO before Thanksgiving.

Remember when Nokia was all the talk in the cell phone world lol? My first "smartphone" was a Nokia.

Nokia hasn't been the same since smartphones became the new trend.

Is the cell phone with the interchangeable faceplates and snake game the product that most people still associate with Nokia?

Man Elop basically destroyed that company. You announce you are getting rid of an OS without a new OS for a year?

Money would have been better spent buying RIM and acquiring their core enterprise holdings.

Nokia ignored the US market for before their Lumia smartphones..but now the US market is huge if you want to sell expensive phones.

Maybe Microsoft could package their other hardware (XBox, tablets, etc) with Nokia to spin-off into another company - perhaps through an IPO. Some notable MSFT investors have been clamoring for Microsoft to ditch the XBox.

Consumers are going to ignore it, so I don't know why I'd do otherwise.

Who says they can't do both?

I think this move is more to get a new CEO. They paid 7B for a new CEO, I hope its worth it. I think this deal could be as bad as HP and Palm, or as good as Motorola with Google. This has a lot of potential.

The money paid here is pocket change for MSFT - a few months worth of income. And it gives them full control of the hardware inside their phones, as well as increases their profit from each phone sold. Seems like a low-risk move to me.
