Doesn't sound like Morey's that excited... "if he comes to camp, he'll have shot at making the team." Not exactly the Brent Barry treatment. He might be necessary insurance at the PG position, as Rafer is really the only one who doesn't come with a big question mark. I'd imagine Stoudamire will only have a realistic shot if (1) Luther is traded to free up a roster spot (and backcourt depth), (2) Francis and Strawberry don't pan out.
Training camp contract. If his Spurs numbers are anything to go by he can't get his shot going playing scrap minutes. I'd rather trade Head for Travis Diener. Shooting %'s better than Stoudamire's and was ranked 4th in assist/turnover ratio plus it's a small salary dump.
So we have 5 PG's coming into camp most likely. Rafer, DJ, Brooks, Francis and most probably the former Mighty Mouse. 5 of them! and not a single legit one in the bunch...
Very interesting. Yao / Dorsey / Mutumbo Scola / Landry / Hayes Artest / Battier McGrady / Barry / Head Alston / Stoudomire / Franics / Brooks The Rockets right now need ball handling at the backup position.
none taken. but we'll both watch and see how it plays out. everything i have heard about his current status and potential future performance suggests he wont ever regain the kind of form he'll need to be a significant contributor on this team. i don't know too many organizations who look around for "insurance" on their third string PG, btw.
According to a recent poll here about half of us think Steve can still contribute a good deal for the Rockets. Until he comes off rehab no one knows anything. But with Damon here in San Antonio...I know of no one that thinks he still belongs in the NBA. That said, if he thinks there is still gas left in the tank, let him come in and tryout after he is released by the Spurs.
This is not going to help Brooks' development. If Stoudamire comes in, he could see backup time to Rafer which puts Brooks at number 3 like last year. Brooks needs more PT to build his confidence so he can lock down the backup spot. Truth is, it's been a veeeery long time since the Rox had a top-tier point guard who was a true floor general.
Agreed. Plus everyone seems to be forgetting how well Alston actually did last year, all things considered. All this talk of "Stoudemire will be the pest pg on the team" is nonsense. Rafer is a proven ironman and Brooks and Stevie are more than enough to spell him when needed. Say no to chuckers!!!
Brooks and damon are identical players. both are shoot first midgets. they both have mediacore playmaking skills and there is noway there both gonna be on the same roster.
You guys who don't want Damon Stoudamire obviously didn't watch him bring it night in and night out while in Portland. There was a reason he was a fan favorite. Sure, he is a little older, but at this point, he still brings more to the table than Aaron Brooks (no offense to Aaron, I do believe he will be our point guard of the future.) Think Sam Cassell of the Celtics last year. Damon will bring a lot of heart and experience to the table. i'm all for itl.
I remember last year we also had five. Rafer, Mike James, AB, JL3 and SF3. But at he end of the day, Rafer is still standing on top of all.
Next on the radar... Larry Hughes. We could have the most inefficient shooting backcourt in NBA history.
