Like Texas, Sweden didn't take social distancing seriously

I think Sweden and its people are vastly misunderstood.

While I think they should shut 80% of businesses down, I can understand their bond between common folk and government.

There is a strong trust I haven't seen anywhere else and absolutely no panic or excessive downplay.

They are just keeping things as normal as possible.

Learned that majority of Europeans are disciplined sans idiots.

yeah there are many factors in their decision to do things differently here, including their trust in the people as you mentioned. they also already have one of the highest suicide rates, which also played a role in not shutting everything down. seems they've been trying to balance the minimizing of deaths while allowing the virus run it's course thru the population (to get more than 50% w/ antibodies hopefully). who knows if it will end up paying off for them, for now they're about average for europe in terms of losses. we don't have any idea how this virus will act in the coming cold season or even years after. if anything, at least for the rest of the world they'll give us some interesting data/insights into the best way of dealing w/ this beast.

 

Hospitals in Texas are not remotely overwhelmed though - they are way undercapacity right now. So again, why is May the right time, but next week is not? Why not June? By your logic, that would give another 4 weeks to slow the spread and get hospitals equipment, right?

Here’s what I can tell you from a place that’s ground zero, the social distancing actually does work. The places in Texas are not underwhelmed because it’s in place. This stuff is so transmissible that it causes chaos the second people congregate

Not that it matters, but the average age of death from covid in Sweden is around 82 which happens to also be their life expectancy. Maybe since their life expectancy is a few years longer than ours then maybe we should pay more attention to how they treat their healthcare. It seems like they had around 4000 excess deaths with much of that centered around the nursing homes and home health care. That is where they screwed up.

You also never seemed to understand that Sweden did have social distancing and tried to quarantine the 70+ group in early March. They did have rules and recommendations in place. You seemed to think that Trump's portrayal of what Sweden was doing was accurate. It simply was not true.

Time will tell if they took the right approach with their overall healthcare relating to covid, but they pretty clearly did make mistakes with elderly care and covid.
