Well my guess is that Morey knows that even if he is fired, he can wake up in the morning and know that he can say and think what he wants, has actual privacy and lives in a country where a dictator doesn’t tell him what to say, what to think or to fear governmental officials taking him away So it is a win no matter what for Morey.
I didn't get a chance to see his disastrous tweet? What did he say exactly? He wants to purge China of all its people?
Im not. Thats why I said to ask. Pretty sure Yaos asked him for some advice on how to run a team and Im sure Morey obliged and gave him some. If it would interfere with any of Yaos business ventures, Im sure hed let him know pretty frankly, he could or couldnt. And Im sure Morey would understand.
I'm 99.999% sure it was just a picture of the sun rising over Hong Kong with the caption of "Hong Kong Awakens... #FreeHongKong" or #IStandWithHK or something
There you go, now you know who the NBA stands with (hint: it's China). Morey's going to be scapegoated for this, not by Tilman but by the 29 other owners behind the scenes.
What has this issue got anything to do with Donald Sterling? That’s a horrible comparison. What Sternling did is exactly against the value of this organization, in this country also. The only possible comparison will be Tilman found out some child porns from Morey’s cellphone and then I will 100% agree he should receive the Sternling treatment. Again, let me emphasis on this again : what Morey said in his tweet is 100% ok with the NBA policy and value (because the NBA actually encourage its employees to publicly voice their views on social issues, see Pop and Kerr). The only problem this time is because it’s customer got upset and that’s a pretty big customer. And hence the announcement was never intended or worded to denounce what Morey had said.
Only because most are not aware that China has been doing this for years but hasn’t gotten a lot of media attention. Businesses are beholden to stockholders or owners so they usually just fire or issue an apology to China to keep access to the market.
Unfortunately, in the NBA statement it only said "support .... sharing views that's important to them" It did not say "support .... views that's aligned with American values" I guess it's implicit. However when issued to the Chinese Netizens, this cannot be implicit. the Chinese Netizens will ask, well if you support sharing views that's important to you, why did you 'fire' Sternling ? (well he didn't share voluntarily , let's assume he did) And hence it becomes 'unfair', it implies the people Sternling offended were more important than the Chinese.
Well that’s exactly the problem. Just because people in mainland China don’t give a sh’t about race discrimination (hey they even call The NBA player as an ape in the broadcast), it doesn’t mean others should view the same. So when you even attempt to compare these to be the same, it’s your problem. Not ours.
I doubt it, I think Morey just wants this thing to blow over. Let's be honest, it was never is intention to stir the pot like this when he made that tweet. Probably saw some videos his Hong Kong friends posted and then just casually posted a tweet supporting them.
Unreal. this is a full scale sellout from the entire NBA. Where is Leonsis and Cuban? Surely they can't stand for this?
Yes the Chinese Netizens making them the same is a very sad fact. Unfotunately if Morey wants to do business over there he needs to be aware of it.
