The El Paso shooters manifesto was linked on cnn Twitter , that’s how I read it this morning. The position should be simple, take religion and race out of it. All hate speech promoting violence shekels be banned from media / social media outlets. Period. Before arguing, take a step back and think about the differences between a disillusioned male thought process and yours.
I have not read the manifesto, have you? I have only seen reports about it, those include the white nationalist's attempts to distance him from trump, blame the "fake media", claim the country will be a one party country as Democrats cater to immigrants, and blame the country's problems on immigration. What of that seems different from trump's divisive rhetoric? The rest of your rant is simply the same hateful and divisive speech that trump and his fellow white nationalists bleat out.
No, CNN linked an article that was about the manifesto. I don't see CNN linking to the manifesto at all. This is clearly about race, the shooter's manifesto made that terribly clear. He made it as clear as possible that he thought immigration was a problem and that he thought the only way it changes is if people scare Mexicans away from immigrating. That was the point of his entire manifesto. Your idea that it was inspired by Christchurch is wrong. He says that he agreed with the Christchurch killer, not inspired by it. Him, Dylan Roof, Christchurch, whoever, are all motivated by the same crap. The Great Replacement conspiracy theory. It's the same crap. You want to ban the manifesto, fine, then you should also be consistent and ban those that peddle in these racist conspiracy theories.
The media is a big part of the problem, they are eating this **** up like a fat boy on a Christmas ham.
I suspect this thread is a disingenuous challenge as speech rights has been a “bastion” for traditional libs as gun rights to traditional cons. It’s not a Big Media problem anymore. Any rube with a million plus subscribers can post something on any of the major platforms and disseminate info as quickly as the Clinton News Network or other lib white hating rags. My answer would be pouring acid to down the mouths of anyone spreading ideas I personally dislike. That’ll teach potential Antifa thug wannabes and cure global warming.
Yes, if there is one thing the shooter showed through his actions and manifesto is that he is a centrist and moderate.
As long as there are people like yourself that want to read this stuff, then someone will make it available.
Nope. Allow the manifestos to be published so that people can continue to see the face of terrorism. I like it because it shows those abroad the side of America some like to hide. Thank god for the internet/social media.
There were a lot of lunatics running around this rock performing mass killings before mass media was ever a thing. The dilemma you propose goes both ways. Far too many are disillusioned & unable distinguish what is or is not hate speech. There are far too many instances today of accusations of hate speech which are entirely out of frame. You start banning that, it's a slippery slope that history has shown leads to nothing good. Putting a coalition or a committee of oversight together to distinguish what is or is not 'hate speech' would be ill conceived. History has shown the problems that would cause as-well. Speech should be wholly off-limits. Parents need to do a better job raising their kids, and mental health needs to be promoted more in society.
It’s a competition game between media networks. Sure , a channel could decide to “act morally” and not disseminate information about the shooter and their beliefs etc .... But the second they do that .... another network CAN cover those things and viewers will shift over . The media isn’t a monolith and networks compete .
So many bitter, disillusioned people here who can't see this is good for them. Or maybe it is a low IQ thing. Who cares if you identify as liberal , this is what's right for a healthy society. It's no different to ISIS propaganda recruiting the next lunatic. Luckily the people making decisions can see that too - https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/04/tech/cloudflare-8chan/index.html
This isn't about free market capitalism and competition. It's where the government needs to step in and say enough is enough. I don't care if a few nerds can't read ISIS propaganda after a terrorist attack to better "educate themselves", I just know it is pointless, only spurs hate and recruits the next one. This is no different, and lawmakers are slowwwwwly beginning to see it. Sometimes a democracy gets too clever for it's own good.
The dude was a teenager before Trump started running for president. So he had a fully formed white supremacist ideology at the age of 15?
It's rather hilarious that a poster like @Senator is concerned about right wing nationalist propaganda and rhetoric being open to the public to consume might lead to brainwashing. News flash @Senator , these manifestos aren't the brainwashing material. They are the RECEIPTS of brainwashing. The source material are Trump rallies, Trump's twitter feed, "anti-sjw" youtube channels, white nationalist youtube channels, online right wing blog sources etc. That is where the brainwashing actually occurs. The manifestos are just expressions of brainwashed individuals.
How in the world can they trot out the video games excuse 20+ years after Columbine? Other countries have access to Grand Theft Auto, too. Guess what they don't have access to and what problem they don't have?
If Trump actually tries to ban violent video games in any way I think he's actually going to lose a good chunk of his base lol.
Yup, it shows how much of a loose cannon he is with his rheotric without even knowing his base that well. A large portion of his base are young white males who play games and subscribe to YouTube and Twitch feeds with right wing nationalist streamers who fret nearly 24/7 about "cultural Marxism" taking over the country. If he doesn't want to place a dent on his base, he probably shouldn't have his bootlickers go around cable news and blame video games.
Do statements that promote war count as hate speech? There was lots of hate speech about Iraq, then we did an illegal war based on false statements, which killed hundred of thousands of people and cost $1,000,000,000,000's. I think statements promoting war are hateful and should be banned as much as other hate speech.
