I don't know how Yuli hit that ball much less kept it as fair as he did. I would like to see that specific swing analyzed in more detail, because that's just not supposed to happen.
Sidenote: just looked at Archer's stats this year. Sheeesh. What happened to him? I wonder if he'd be a good buy-low candidate if PIT decides to move on from him. Maybe Strom could work his magic with him? His decline is pretty mind-boggling. TAM with an absolute haul for him in hindsight. Archer's ERA by season: 2013: 3.22 2014: 3.33 2015: 3.23 2016: 4.02 2017: 4.07 2018: 4.31 2019: 5.83
I think it could have mattered. I also think that it was pure adrenaline driving everything. He actually caught the ball which I doubt he was expecting. He's looking straight at third and has the guy dead to rights, but I'm not sure his brain's caught back up that taking that out actually puts him in a better position than the standard out at first. You're taught to look the runner back, but it's rare you actually have the chance to throw behind them, so I think I he was just operating all on muscle memory. Well, Bregs picked him up with a solo shot, so that's good.
