Idk if it's a temporary/backup thing or not, but 19 year old Wilyer Abreu is now on the River bandits roster. He spent last year in the GCL without a ton of success, but the Astros did think enough of him that they gave him a $300k bonus as an older amateur. He's probably just a placeholder, but you never know with kids that age.
Probably temporary, as there’s a lot of injuries up and down the system and I’m sure they’re just trying to bide some time until the draft is over, at which point they’ll make more permanent assignments for a lot of players. But it’d be a great sign if he stuck there. Other moves: Humberto Castellanos to AAA Nick Hernandez to AA Alejandro Flores and Ramiro Rodriguez to High A Abreu and Orlando Marquez to Quad Cities. High A has 9 guys either on the IL, being reassigned, or temporary inactive. QC has 7, AA/AAA 4 each, Houston 8. Crazy.
Yeah est now only has 3 players listed as OFs that played stateside last year: Andres Santana, Hector Martinez, and Juan Ramirez, so I expect that may be a bit of a focus in the draft, especially with the OF from the DSL not being a particularly exciting group.
Who homered today: Lorenzo Quintana, twice (first two home runs with Round Rock, 6 season) Abraham Toro (10, grand slam) Michael Wielansky (2, 2-run) David Hensley (3, 2-run)
2019 Dominican Summer League Astros Pitchers Edinson Batista Reimy Beltre Jose Betances Carlos Calderón Juan De Los Santos Marcos Eusebio Ronny Garcia Ricardo León Cristofer Mezquita Jeremy Molero José Nodal Daniel Pacheco Miguel Padilla Jherson Pereira Carlos Quintero Johnagel Ramirez Fabricio Reina Misael Tamarez Notable pitchers from the 2018 team who are likely heading to the US: Heitor Tokar, Franny Cobos, Valente Bellozo, Jairo Lopez (They're not on the roster, so they could be rejoining the DSL team later, but their performances last year were good enough for them to graduate from the DSL) Catchers Freddy Guilamo Carlos Hurtado Jonarkys Lopez Miguel Palma Ricardo Toro Notable catchers from the 2018 team who are likely heading to the US: Jose Alvarez Infielders Ricardo Balogh Cristian Gonzalez Sebastian Grullon Junior Marte Yohander Martinez Enmnauel Morillo Ayendy Ortiz Notable infielders from the 2018 team who are likely heading to the US: Victor Mascai, Jeury Castillo Outfielders Omar Diaz Jesus Liranzo Andres Monzon Frank Perez Tomas Ramirez Notable outfielders from the 2018 team who are likely heading to the US: Franklin Pinto
Players who have signed and not listed on a roster: RHPs Daniel Subero Jaimie Melendez Luis Vega OF Jairo Jose Subero was one of the top pitchers signed according to Baseball America, so it's possible he's headed to the GCL. Melendez and Vega are the two latest signees, so they might just not be ready. Jose signed on July 2nd, but wasn't notable on BA, so it might just be he's the 6th best OF they signed, and they only need 5 on the roster. I also saw an article saying the Astros signed a Cuban catcher a month ago, but he hasn't shown up on a transaction log yet. Ricardo Leon and Jose Betances are probably the most notable players repeating from last year.
To my knowledge, here the players who received bonuses over $200k: Palma Martinez Ramirez Leon Betances Not much to get excited about based on that. I do like Hurtado as a deep sleeper catching prospect.
Just wanted to interject real quick and say, definitely really appreciate @Snake Diggit , @tellitlikeitis , and @prospecthugger for all you guys do and provide
Balogh and Ortiz sort of intrigue me as switch-hitting infielders, but yeah, we'll have to wait like 6-8 weeks to see who makes themselves somewhat interesting.
I’m more excited to see who they sign on 7/2. Lorenzo would be another Nova level prospect, and hopefully there will be at least 5-6 other guys who get at least $300k.
Robaina, an 18-year-old from Cuba, made his debut last year in the Gulf Coast League. In 11 appearances (4 starts), Robaina was 0-4 with two saves and a 6.84 ERA.
Agreed but they haven't posted about a Yordon Alvarez homerun in over a week. These guys need to regroup and come back strong this weekend with more Alvarez HR posts.
This is very interesting. I actually caught some of Ramirez's 1st game and thought he pitched better than his line indicated. All of his walks were on 3-2 pitches, and he blew a number of pitches by some guys, but maybe he needs a tick more control to compete in A ball.
Hector Martinez was assigned to Corpus on a fill-in basis. Martinez, who turns 21 on July 6, hit .207/.326/.314 with two home runs and 14 RBI in 40 games with the GCL team last season. The Astros signed him for $300,000 in 2014 the day after he turned 16 that year.
