Now that it is clear zone D is here to stay what do you all think about what kind of players we should get? does Webber seem as good now as he did before? does zone D makes a playerlike Cuttino a little bit more expendable as long as it truly improved the team ? What do you all think?

What makes you certain zone defense is here to stay? For all we know it could be a disaster next year and they chunk it.

A player that would be perfect for the rockets next year with a zone defense is Shawn Bradley. I never really liked Bradley but to give him the ability to just stand around under the basket makes him a great asset. He would average about 5 blocks per game easily next year.

    I have no idea.

    Will teams play college zones?

Will teams play defense mainly in the paint?

I suspect the later over the former. I bet that most teams play 1-1 defense, with off the ball defenders sluffing toward the middle. The end effect will be less low post offense.

My biggest fear is that the game will be too ugly to watch, i.e the thing the league is trying to fix will get worse.

IMHO, the NBA zone will be nothing like the college zone because there is no defensive 3 seconds call in college. The goal of the NBA zone is to de-emphasize one-on-one play (ie ISO's) and create ball movement. If Shaq can be fronted by one player and shaded to by another then someone is open if they move without the ball and break to the hoop. I am cautiously optimistic, but think it will make the game more interesting.

In addition, I believe it will be possible to double Kobe (or Stack or Iverson, or Carter or Wallace, or - fill in your favorite offensive super-hero) when they DON'T have the ball. This means more seams in the defense and places an emphasis on moving without the ball and hitting medium range jumpers. (These shots will be in the "seams" of the NBA zone).

Without ever seeing an NBA zone, I feel it will greatly emphasize:

    1) foot speed on defense (to recover after you have doubled).

    2) a previously unthought of concept on offense - height per foot speed. Example, a taller but slower player on the wing will be able to shoot over the zone easier than a faster but shorter player.

    3) the small forward postion (and to some extent PF) which will be radically redefined.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

The refs don't call offensive 3 seconds with any regularity. Does anyone really expect them to get religion about the defensive three seconds?

In the ancient history of the league when players were slower and smaller, the league outlawed the zone. Now with the taller and stronger pros, the zone will be even more disastrous.

I can't believe that the league did not give this a trial period in the CBA or the summer leagues or something.

The thing is that the zones will not look like
College zones. . hell they won't really be zones.

You'll end up with some organized confusion on
    Defense.
You will more of a guy fronting Shaq . .
    another shadowing behind. not committed
    but definately 'in the area'

get use to that term . . .people won't guard
anyone but will be IN THE AREA of their man.
