If he gets it before the playoffs begin he will stop playing hard and he will lose his motivation

This comment here is quite possibly the biggest myth in the NBA right now.

The contract extension before the playoffs shouldn't affect his performance....winning championships is what these guys play for (or should be playing for)

    Yes!

This is part of the Battier deal, now Memphis has virtually renounced Gasol and they have to commit to a sign and trade with us. Thabeet wasn't the prize, he was the price. ;)

Maybe next season. But if Z-Bo gets this now, I predict he will play completely out of his mind against the Spurs. He will be pumped beyond belief. He's now my pick to be Most Dominant Player in the 1st round.

    Spurs are in deeeeep trouble.

Everybody has always been saying that Zach Randolph only plays hard because its contract season. But he's been putting up great numbers last year to.

What are you talking about? Why would they renounce Gasol? Assuming memphis signed Randolph to an extension starting at 12-16 million per year, that still only takes their team salary to approximately 48-52 million next year. which would still easily allow them room to sign gasol as well and still be close to the 70million dollar pay roll they had this year.

Simply put, the expiring contracts of Marco Jaric and Battier (14+ million) will offset whatever extension gasol is likely to get.

I will predict that once you all hear the terms of this extension, you all are going to be elated by the amount and at the same time laugh at the stupidity of our management team for such a ridiculous contract. This is my prediction. See if it doesn't come true.

Yeah, I mean, I guess they want to sign 4 players to really big deals and just kind of "go with it" regarding other players on the roster, right? Because remember, that's how you field a winning team.

This is not really a prediction since it's already come true on this forum. Many here have said they don't feel Z-Bo is worth long-term huge money at his age (and questionable history) and they want the Grizzlies to saddle themselves with a big commitment.

The real questions are whether Z-Bo lives up to the contract and if the Grizzlies retain Marc Gasol.

This is a good prediction, albeit probably a foregone conclusion with the Grizzlies recent history of extensions/contracts and the very nature of nba signings (which almost always tends to overpay). With conley getting nearly 9mil per and Rudy Gay's nearly 16 million per I find it highly unlikely they'll sign randolph to anything close to what many would call fair value... perhaps 4-50million. And in light of this past season signing of David Lee for 6yr 80million, Outlaws 5yr 35 million and Joe Johnsons 6 yrs 124million contract, I'd say its a safe bet your prediction will come true.

My est. if they do indeed sign randolph, 5 years 80million, which is just slightly less than Gays 5 yr 82 million.

People always seem to forget that the Grizzlies are owned by a billionaire. The Grizzlies were paying the luxury tax just to make the playoffs before. He was cheap during the rebuild, same as OKC. This is his baby. He built this team, he will pay the crazy money to keep it together until it eventually stalls out. Hopefully we can squeeze a WCF appearance out of this group at the least.

Then in 4-5 seasons, we rebuild again.

Why will Randolph agree to 10M a year when Gay is making 80M for 5 years? He obviously considers himself as their best player, and wants to be paid as such. He'll end up getting something extremely close to the contract Rudy Gay got, another reason why I said Gay's extension would spell doom for the current era of the Grizzlies.

If they do end up paying Randolph the same amount, I don't think they'll have enough cash retain Gasol. 16+16+9, that's already 41M of a 70M cap devoted to just 3 players. If you assume another 16M goes to their rookies under contract I don't see how they can both Gasol, stay under the cap AND still be able to afford the minimum number of players mandated by the league. The best case scenario would be if Randolph gets a massive extension and the Grizzlies get drilled by the Spurs in the first round. It'll automatically make Heisley into cheapskate mode, and we can probably pry Gasol from them for picks.

Where did i state that I expect Randolph to sign for 10$ mill per? In fact in my previous post i explicitly stated that I'd expect him to get something similar to Rudy Gay. And what rookies are the Grizzlies going to pay 16million to next year?? I'm not sure where you are getting your numbers, but in 2011, the grizzlies will have a payroll of 36,416,000 assigned to 10 players. 36 million to 10 players, leaving a ton of room to comfortably fit in Randolph at 16 and Gasol at 10-14 per. So even if Gasol and Randolph sign for 16 and 14 million each, they'd still be under 70million next year.
