What's the first thing you think of when you find out someone believes in God? Do you think they're a good person, uneducated, blind, religious, etc. Do you believe it makes a person better, or that it makes you better? I believe the majority of atheists believe religious people who believe in God are blindly following what their parents taught them.

What's your take? Please keep the discussion civil, so it doesn't end up in the D&D.

I'm okay with people being religious. After all, I pray before every meal, after waking up, and before going to bed. However, I can't stand people that are always openly declaring their religious beliefs. Your belief in God is just that...your own belief. So keep it to yourself. It's sort of a pet peeve of mine.

I really don't think nothing of it until/if they start consistently telling you become more religiously active then I despise them and think they're tools..

I certainly wouldn't assume they were uneducated, and I wouldn't say obedient either because even though many people are religious, they don't exactly obey the tenets of their doctrine. Generally, I think people more or less do what feels right to them - religion or no religion.

I also wouldn't say that they are holding society back - I think the institution of religion itself is doing that.

And yes, in general, I do think religious people blindly believe what they were told growing up. Yes, there are exceptions, and just about every religious person you ask will say that's not the case for them, but it's plainly obvious that most religious people were indoctrinated at a young, extremely impressionable age. There's a reason for that.

I also think that many, many "religious" people are just keeping up appearances. In America, and Texas especially, it can be a social death sentence to say you're not religious, and most people aren't in a big hurry to take that step.

By the way - obvious D&D thread is obvious.

I disagree. Not everything about religion and politics belong there. A lot of people pass judgments when they find out someone believes in God. I want to hear those judgments.

Believing in God and being religious are not necessarily the same thing.

For the purposes of this discussion they are interchangeable. I don't think it changes an atheist's perspective.

Really ALL kids/people are blinded by what their parents teach them, religious & non-religious both. It just happens to be unfortunate when its religion

(This is why this can't totally stay in the Hangout. Cuz thats a joke, but...)

I've been on both sides. Personally I do NOT think religious people are as bad as they're made to be. I've even said in a Richard Dawkins thread that given a choice of a weekend fellowship meal with christians or atheists that I'm probabably choosing the christians. That should probably answer the thread question.

Its just we're in a period where its DUE time for religion to have the mirror shined on them. When inquiry involves religion, thats where you'll hear the cry of "is anything SACRED anymore?" the loudest. But the shield of "divinity" just can't be valid enough to hold back true objective assessment.

I don't want to be DaDakota'd, but not everyone visits the D&D. I believe threads about the general consensus of politics and religion can fit in the Hangout.

Take this bullcrap out of the Hangout, and go back to your dark hole in D&D. Not everyone visits D&D because **** D&D. If I wanted to argue with people who won't listen to anything, I'd call my ex-girlfriend. D&D is supposed to be civil, but those trolls have only themselves to blame for Hatefest 2011.

If you want a scientific poll, perhaps you should consider rewording incredibly biased questions. Now, get the hell out of here.

Generally I have come to a conclusion about someone I meet prior to knowing their religious beliefs. Just because someone believes in (a) God, doesn't make them good, bad, smart, dumb. It is just another facet of their life that contributes to their overall being.

No offense, but what you 'believe' may or may not have any bearing on the reality of the board's rules.

Think of it sort of like religion!

How can you just do a blanket viewpoint? Each person is an individual, and it is impossible to lump them all together like you are asking.

I believe each person believes what they choose to believe, and as long as it doesn't have an effect on me, or society, good for them.

I do think religion in general is not good, but that is for another thread.

This poll is biased and is has the opposite effect you expected.

My parents have shown me that faith, moral fiber and hard work are the most important things towards living a purposeful life.
