We always have disc threads, but invariably people always end up listening to the same bands they've listened to for years. What new music have you found in the past year? New to you, new to the world, whatever. Also, where did you find it? Portastatic: Although I've listened to Superchunk for nearly a decade, I had never heard of or had noticed Portastatic (lead singer Mac's other band since the mid 90s) until working in Atlanta last Fall. On a trip to visit my grandma, I stopped by my old music store and shopped around. As I was perusing the Superchunk section I noticed a little label that read 'also check out Portastatic'. I've been happy ever since. the delgados: A friend dug up the album, and I loosely listened to it. Then later, surfing around on Merge's website when I noticed that alot of the band members had listed their favorite albums of the past year. Mac and several others had mentioned the delgados, bringing it into my awareness again. I used Napster to hunt the Great Eastern down and fell in love with it. I later bought the real album, just to help out the band (more than some copyright appreciation ). Cat Power: A girl from Atlanta. LPs: Moon Pix and a Covers album of greats (and another ep). There's a 'browse users files' section on Napster. This is what makes Napster a true community. Rather than just pilfering music from others that you already knew about you can use 'browse user files' to find out about other bands. In my situation, I noticed that alot of the people who had the delgados, Throwing Muses, Portastatic, Modest Mouse, etc. all had Cat Power too. I gave it a listen and fell in love with it. I haven't had the opportunity to go purchase the albums yet, but I will buy them. I have two Napster success stories, thanks Napster bunny! What have you found lately? ------------------ (===)
>DJ Cheb i Sabbah-(indian sort of Dj mellow stuff)on Napster >Kruder & Dorfmeister-(Mega remixes, these guys are so excellent)on Napster >Smith & Mighty-(Dub all Mighty! YESS!)on Napster >Rockers Hi-Fi-(Remixes with all the famous DJs)on Napster >Fela Kuti-(African James Brown, 20 minute jams and stuff! REally Good!)on Napster. >Africando-(salsa to tha bone)on Napster >Beanfield-(more mellow electronica) on Napster Perhaps you can find these in the stores and online, but I had never ever even heard of these people until the wicked Napster gave away these wonderful sounds. ------------------ Whatever you want to do, you have to do something else first.
Doves - alt.pop - heard them on the radio of all places! Snowboy - Latin - Amazon.com ------------------ "I swallowed a lot of agression...along with a lot of pizzas."
Doves!!! way to go JB... this band has a great CD out right now. I saw their video on M2, had to have it. Coldplay more british "mood rock" found on M2 Nick Drake "mood rock" from the 70's. This guy was so depressed he offed himself. Good stuff though. I actually found out about this guy from a VW ad. One of his songs was on a Cabrio commercial. Stephen Malkmus lead singer of Pavement has a solo CD that's pretty good. Found on the wicked Napster before it's demise. rH
Travis Alternative UK band. Saw them in concert last fall. Very cool! ------------------ "...just because a clever person can complicate the discussion about the truth doesn't necessarily mean he or she is making any progress in finding it."
Buckcherry -- Kinda like a harder version of the Black Crowes. Great stuff!! Joao Gilberto -- Can you beat Bossa Nova? Didn't think so!! ------------------ Hey now, Hey now, don't Dream it's over...
That damn Yellow song gets wedged in my head every time I hear it! I like it though. ------------------ "I swallowed a lot of agression...along with a lot of pizzas."
Dead Prez:I found them on Audiogalaxy. They're really worth listening to for anyone that is into hip hop with meaningful lyrics. ------------------
Yep I heard the instrumental and then went out and listened to a single. Pretty good. ------------------ Note: It was my cowhead. I started the cowhead craze, and my cowhead inspired Mooch to step up and bring us a victory. Thank you for your time.
The Salteens from Canada Went to see an Melbourne/Australian Band "The LuckSmiths" for the first time on saturday night and they were sensational, which i already knew as i owned several of their CDs, but their support band the SALTEENS from Canada were also excellent and bought their cd at the gig, great happy music sort of like Ben Folds 5 on Acid. www.salteens.com Also all you Americans get out their and buy the current great Aussie export band POWDERFINGER's CD you will all love it. ------------------ "Repression never did me any harm (I finally ceased to include "stop masturbating" as one of my guilt ridden New Year's resolutions, but that's a different topic)." This is cool to see all of these new names. I'll get to napstering later on and determining if I want to up the ante to a 'purchase'. p.s. I made good w/ Cat Power today by shelling out a god awful sum of > $48 for three discs. Thanks again Napster bunny! ------------------ (===)
Achebe--Superchunk...pop punk, right? Never heard em, but I think that's the genre from what I've read. Green Day and Blink 182 are the mainstream acts in that genre, but there's better stuff out there. If you like pop punk, try the bands TSAR, The Yo-Yo's, and A. Also, if you like-- Weezer, Eve 6, Everclear try: Marvelous 3, Lit, Coward, the Katies ------------------ It's Shandon's fault. "Oh ****!" ---Kenny Thomas
I found these 3 bands at cc.net today!!!! ---------------------------- Portastatic: Although I've listened to Superchunk for nearly a decade, I had never heard of or had noticed Portastatic (lead singer Mac's other band since the mid 90s) until working in Atlanta last Fall. LOL heypartner. BTW, I sent you an email (or paypal did I guess). TheFreak, I guess that's the right genre... some sort of indie punk. They're not as goofy as Green Day and some of that other stuff like All and Mr. T's experience, etc. so they're not per se the definition of pop punk... but they're still pretty poppy (years ago Superchunk was much more hard than it is now, but all bands slow down... except for Neil Young ). Thanks for those bandnames, I'll check them all out. I actually saw the Yo-Yo's on someone's machine but I was too lazy to download their stuff. I'll go try to now. Thanks again! ------------------ (===)
Marvelous 3, Oar, and Talib Kwelli for this year. Download the long version of "The Craziest Game of Poker by Oar from Napster." You won't regret it... ------------------ Boston College - Big East -East Division Regular Season Champs Worst to First in 2001!
Heb, you look for Salteens on napster, cause man they are great can't take this CD out of the player. At the Drive-In -They are a mix between Rage Against the Machine and The Offspring. They are a hard-rocking band from El Paso. Yup, I said El Paso. Who would have guessed that? Anyways, their current album, Relationship of Command is GREAT, I love it. My brother got me into them. Check their stuff out, I think you'll like it. ------------------ "And i'm spent!"
At the Drive in is pretty good. They're coming here to Salt Lake pretty soon to play... on the same night as Fugazi (it's like 16 bucks though for some reason for At the Drive in... luckily Fugazi is of course only $6). It's weird that somebody scheduled both shows on the same night. Smeg, I downloaded the Salteens but I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet b/c of a panda show that my wife and I are watching... little cute fuzzy fuzzies. ------------------ (===)
I found this new band today called Led Zeppelin! They are pretty good, but the singer must have something wrong with his lemon, because he is always asking people to squeeze it.... ------------------ "Any event, once it has occurred, can be made to appear inevitable by a competent historian."
