How important is your job commute to your job happiness? I am currrently looking for a new day gig. My current commute, to a job I do not like, is from SW Houston to 290/Mangum. I am interviewing for a job that sounds fantastic, and I will probably get an offer, but the commute will be from SW Houston to the Woodlands. I've never had to commute that far for a job in my entire life. Thoughts????????
It depends on the flexibility of the other situations on the job. My job is 8-5 but I normally show up at 8:30 and I can normally call in to work from home if I want. There are times I have to work late or from home so it evens out. If I have to drive far for work then there has to be other mitigating factors to make up for it.
It takes me 25 minutes in the morning and about 35 minutes in the afternoon. My dad says that anything under an hour in Houston is a good commute time. I guess its all relative though. Commute time is important for me. I wouldnt want to waste 2 hours in the car each day for my job that I spend 9 hours at each day..... Thats like slavery or something.
About 18 minutes in the morning. And 19 in the afternoon. The commute from my apartment complex between Memorial/Briarforest and the Beltway to the set of office buidlings just south of Nordstroms is seriously like clockwork. I make the same exact lights every single day. The time only varies when there are flashing signals or wrecks.
If you don't mind me asking, Drewdog, what part of town is your job in, and what part of town do you live in? I Mapquested the commute.....42 miles each way. My Dad commuted 30 miles each way for 20 years....SW Houston to La Porte.
That's a long drive. I commute from Spring to the Texas Medical Center (about 70 miles roundtrip) and it's not that bad on I-45, but I commute during off-peak hours. Personally, I'd move if I were commuting that far, especially if I had to deal with rush-hour traffic. Giving up 2 hours of your day traveling really sucks, unless you want to stick around the area after work.
Oh, Tex, there is nothing I hate in this world more than the drive to The Woodlands. Is this job at least on the freeway? I'm serious...it takes like 45 minutes to get there, then it's another 10-15 to my in-law's subdivision. I'm either going to have to move out there or they're going to have to move closer because I think they're starting to think I don't like them since I don't go up there with Renee everytime. I love them, that drive just kills me for some reason.
man, i hear ya. i hate that drive, too. the only time i make it is for concerts and when i have a hearing in montgomery county. i'm not real fond of that trip!
Yeah, that's a hellacious commute to be making every morning and afternoon. 2 hours a day in traffic = 40 hours a month in traffic = 2,080 hours a year in traffic. I live near Oak Forest and work near Greenspoint. About 25 minutes each way. And that's long for me. I would rather self mutilate with an old compass from high school than drive in Houston traffic.
I used to make a 50 mile commute each way everyday for 3 years, from Deer Park to West Houston. I finally moved to that side of town and a few months later changed jobs. Now my commute is about 20 minutes each way, from the west side to galleria area. I will never ever ever have a long commute again. It slowly kills you. Seriously.
You got it backwards... You're supposed to LIVE in the Woodlands and WORK in Houston, not the other way around! I suggest starting here... http://www.uhaul.com/
I used to have a part-time job at the Galleria during the summer. I live in Sugar Land, but the commute wasn't bad at all. I basically live right near 59 in Sugar Land, so I could get from my house to the Chimney Rock exit in under 10-15 minutes. Another 4-5 minutes, and I was in the Galleria.
Pfft. Trying commuting from Magnolia to Sugarland. I leave at 5am every morning as to avoid traffic and it still takes me an hour on the roads.
I suggest moving to The Woodlands. I love living here. I had a commute from TW to I-10 and Eldridge and it SUCKED!! So finally I convinced them to let me work from home and now I commute from my bed to the computer. Its fantastic!!
I live in Midtown (Bagby & Westheimer) and commute out to Beltway 8 and Clay Rd. Esentially I am going against traffic each day, but there is always traffic when I get on I-10 where it bottlenecks at the West Loop.... Alot of times I bypass I-10 and take 290 to 43rd st (turns into Clay Rd.). There are a few more stoplights but its basically the same distance as going 10 to beltway North to Clay.
You lost me on how you got the 2,080 - wouldn't it be 40*12 which is 480? Or another way you can do this (which doesn't account for holidays) is to say 2 hours a day X 5 days a week X 52 weeks in a year which would be 520.
