My other music thread got me thinking about my first concert. This should tell something about our ages. FIRST My first rock concert was at the Kentucky State Fair back in the late 70's. I saw Alice Cooper. I wasn't a big fan but got talked into by some friends. It was sorta cool...and very loud. No telling how much of my hearing was lost on that night. The next year I saw Heart in their prime at the state fair. Walter Egan of "Hammer and Nail" fame opened for them. BTW, unlike most state fairs, this one drew good groups in their prime back then. I'm not sure if they do the same now. LAST Janet Jackson at Compaq last year. Awesome. What a terrific show. OS
first big concert: Duran Du-F'ing-ran at The Summit in 1983! I was 8 years old, rocking up in the top, top rows in what I thought were very cool clothes at the time. last big concert [assuming you mean "last" as in most recent and not "last" as in final]: Radiohead at the Cynthia Mitchell Woods Mitchell Woods Pavilion in june. unbelievably ecstatic and beyond mere mortal words conjured up by humans.
The first show I ever saw was the Circle Jerks. It was at Power Tools on Franklin (right on the bayou) - probably before many peoples' time here... There was about an inch of water in the place for some reason, and it was my first pit. I will never forget it. I cannot remember the last "show/concert" I went to. Since the first it's all a drunken blur... I'm not into Janet Jackson, needless to say. As you get older and drunker, they all blend together, I guess. If you ever get a chance, though, go catch the Butthole Surfers next time they come into town. Even if you're not on drugs - awesome show. That one I definitely remember. Oh, and Don't do drugs, kids.
My first concert was in the early 80's. My dad drug me to a Kenny Rogers concert. He had gotten free tickets because he worked security for him during the day, The last one i went to was probably about 2 years ago(I don't have time to go to concerts) I can't remember who it was though . It was either Robert Earl Keen or Jars of Clay(who will actually be my next concert at the end of this month). I saw them both about the same time. CK
Damn, OS, Alice Cooper was my first concert as well! It was in 1975 at the Sam Houston Colisium (sp?) while promoting his "Welcome to my Nightmare" album. My ears are still ringing! I remember he rode out on the stage on a giant bed. It's all kinda fuzzy after that. The last one was "The Who" last year (or was it the year before?) at CWM pavillion.
Speaking of Prince. I hear Mayte is dating TOMMY FREAKIN' LEE now??? When did Prince and Mayte break up?? os
Hey, I remember Power Tools. That place was like a dungeon. Never saw a band there, but I did see a UH classmate DJ there at about 2 in the morning. My first big concert was (everyone do that "Satan" handsign) Iron Maiden and Anthrax at the Summit in 1991. I was 15 and had a mullet. Do I need to go further? Last big show I saw wasn't that big. It was Marshall Allen, Luqman Ali, a trombone player and a local bass player doing the songs of Sun Ra at the MECA Auditorium (located near the municipal courthouse). That was a cool show.
First big concert: Alanis Morrisette, Compaq Center, September of 1996 Most recent concert: Dixie Chicks (girlfriend dragged me) during the Summer of 2000... GAWD FREAKING DAMN my concert life is pathetic. The ironic part is that now I think Alanis sucks and the Dixie Chicks are pretty cool, when it used to be the other way around... Now, I had a chance to see Tom Petty back in 1994 or '95 at the Woodlands Pavilion, but the person driving had to take a drug test a couple days later and wimped out because he might have gotten some second hand weed smoke...wuss... I was on my way to see Presidents of the USA at Numbers back in 1995, but missed that concert due to the fact I didn't know where the f**k I was going and got lost on the way up there... Earl had to die...
First concert: Duran Du-F'ing-ran, 1983 Frank Erwin Center, Austin, TX. My older sis got me the tix and her boyfriend got me some California Coolers (remember those?) I would've enjoyed the show had I been able to hear it... all i heard were screaming girls. Last Concert: The Verve at Aerial Theater.
First: Queensryche at the Summit in April of 1991 (I was 15 years old). Suicidal Tendencies opened up for them. Man it was weird to smell all of that pot and not know what the hell it was. Sucked because we had to leave at 12pm (my dad drove us) and they hadnt played Silent Lucidity yet. I was pissed. Last: Live, Toadies, 7M3, Vallejo at Waterloo Park (Austin, TX)Summer 2001. Man I love the Toadies. That was the last time I will probably ever crowd surf, because nowadays its just a bunch of fuc%ing frat daddies who want to beat the piss out of people. Its a shame the Toadies broke up because they ALWAYS put on one hell of a live show!
my first was u2 back in dc a long time ago... my last was 'twisted 8' in chicago w/pete yorn, blink 182, sum 41, bush, 311, alien ant farm, puddle of mudd, and the crystal method. pretty kickass concert. it was great. the u2 concert sucked tho.
First: Triumph - Never Surrender tour 1983 I was only 13 and that show rocked. Foghat opened with dancing chicks. It was at the Sam Houston Coliseum. Rough crowd, plenty of fights, and lots of shirt stealing. Excellent show. Last: Rush - Test For Echo tour 1997 - 2nd leg of tour It was at the Smirnoff Vodka outdoor concert venue in Dallas(one of the lamest places around). The show was only okay. The sound was lame because you could not hear it from the lawn general admission area. We kept yelling to turn it up. There was some other venue nearby and I guess they don't turn it up loud there. Pay good money and you can barely hear the music . The crowd was pretty lame as well. Highlight was playing of 2112 . Started passing on concerts after that low volume show...will never go back to Smirnoff again. Surf
Surf, I was there!!!! I saw all the fights for t-shirts, the girls....everything! I was 20, so I probably had a different perspective than you did! Do you remember the 90 minutes wait between Foghat and Triumph?
I seem to recall a long wait but don't recall it being 90 minutes. I remember a fight broke out towards the back during that break and everyone standing up trying to get a look. The most striking part of that show was Triumph's hanging barrage of 5,000+ lights which were synced to their music. Every note change gave a different combination of lights. It's still one of the best light shows I've seen and I've been to about 50 shows in between my first and last. I went to the Thunder 7 tour of Triumph as well which used more lasers. That's cool you were there. I was with an older crowd and I was a 13 year old rebel with a blue jean cutoff jacket. It was hilarious. I remember the ride there and back in a van with a crazed driver who almost got us all killed .
