According to the Bushies: http://www.house.gov/banking_democrats/pr052004.html . . . remarks made by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Alphonso Jackson during a hearing before the committee. When responding to a question from one of the committee members, Mr. Jackson stated that he doesn’t talk about housing the poor because “being poor is a state of mind, not a condition.” . . . I think I'm rich, therefore I am! Where's the retirement account, nice house and the expensive car collection?
"After a break in the proceedings, Mr. Jackson attempted to recast his remarks indicating that his father had taught his family that they were not poor and that (anyone) that has hope can make it in this country." ok i was going to reply without reading the link first but then i decided to read the story and they reply. his clarification is basically something to the effect of what i thought he really meant. he was trying to say, in very poor way though, that people can come to accept being poor as their life and try to not strive for more. that is something that i feel is true. i'm not saying its the reason why there are poor people, but having the right mindset will help make your life better.
Being poor is not a state of mind. There are place in this society for poor people. Who else will work at Walmart, McDonalds, wash our cars, clean our bathrooms, and build our houses for cheap. Someone has to be poor to keep the prices of what we buy low. Guess what would happen if everyone got a college degree in the US. There would be some well educated people working at Walmart and McDonalds. There will always be poor people because we need poor people, but I believe we have a responsibility as human beings to try to make sure no one suffers more than they have to because America has the resources to do so. We also have to make sure people who do try to get ahead have the opportunity to do so. What is rediculous is that I know people who put themselves in crazy debt to go to college only to graduate with no job prospects except being a customer service agent or a waitress.
so the people are poor why? you are just making a statement with no sort of logic behind it. you are saying "society" makes poor people to keep things cheap for the "non-poor" people. you make it sound like a big conspiracy that "society" has out to manufacture poor people. first of all, not everyone is made for college. there are people who are there and who are trying to go there who don't even need to be there. a lot of people would be much better off just going to a trade school and i don't mean that in a negative fashion either. second, there are people who do work at low paying jobs who are well educated. we don't need poor people. we need people who are willing to work whatever job is availible until they are able to find better opportunities. we need to make sure those poor people are constantly trying to improve their situation and not just growing to accept it.
Very few people living in America are truely poor. Not like people living in third world countries are poor. There are people out there who have homes and eat three meals a day that are considered to be living in poverty, but don't tell that to the people living in Haiti, an Indian ghetto, or most of Africa. In many ways, being poor depends on your perspective, and on how you compare to the people around you. I don't know how it is in Texas, but where I live, there are places you can get free food, there is free shelter available, and there are free health care clinics. Do you think a starving Somali would consider someone with food, shelter, and basic health care poor, or would they be considered pretty well off?
Robbie, the Wendys down my street screws my order up 75% of the time I order from there. Do you mind filling in for some of these incompent workers while they try to find someone who will work for min wage for the mean time? You're whole arguement was based on exceptions. There are ALWAYS exceptions to the rule.
We have higher standards. I never understand why you guys post this stuff everytime a thread about the poor comes up. We do not live in Hati. We have a higher standard of living. I really don't understand the point you guys are trying to make. Are they living better than people in Ethiopia, yes. So what. They don't live in Ethiopia. They're still poor by our standards, and that's all that really matters.
We do have the fattiest poor people in the world. A good bit of our poor people are poor because they are lazy, not because they are uneducated or a lack of jobs.
yeah and when i worked as a cashier at a bowling alley i screwed stuff up all the time too. somehow i managed to make it thru college and become a professional stock trader.
??? please show me where I said lazy people are fat, or vice versa. Notice, two seperate sentences with two seperate thoughts of mind. Please do not twist my words around.
Whatever dude. Not the same. See, I actually had a disagreement with what I thought to be the content of his post. You, just come in and judge people's posting style, not even debating whatever the topic of the thread is.
I have seen at least three posts from you today alone where you say something along the lines of "You guys are so funny" (meaning "You guys are stupid, I know better, and here's why"). Pot. Kettle. Black.
Hilarious, because this is exactly what you tried to do with Space Ghost in this thread. Again. pgabriel - POT. KETTLE. BLACK.
