Please let us know about your favorite Tex-Mex place!! Also, let us know what town your in... We can rate prices too! $ - $2 - $6 dollars a plate $$ - $7 - $10 dollars a plate $$$ - $10.01 and up I'll start: $$ La Mexicana, Houston excellent tortas, enchiladas, entomadas and 'ritas... $ El Rey, Houston sorta cuban/mex food, fast and good. Cheap tacos 1.25 and breakfast tacos .99!! $$-$$$ The Original Ninfa's on Navigation, Houston. I don't what it is about this place, but it ain't like the others in the chain. I enjoy the enchiladas! Good 'rita's too! there's plenty more out there... let's hear about your faves.... rH ------------------ visit: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love!
$ La Feria-South Austin, $4.50 lunch specials, tea included. $ Juan in a Million-East Austin, best breakfast in town, bar none. $$ Nuevo Leon-East Austin, service sometimes unreliable, but combo plates usually kick butt. $$ Polvos-South Austin, probably more Mexican than Tex-Mex, but they have a kick ass grande burrito and papas con chorizo. ------------------ www.swirve.com "Pre-born, you're fine, pre-school, you're f*****."-George Carlin
With the "Chuy's Ain't Liberal" thread popping up, I knew it was only a matter of time before this one would. All of the following Tex Mex places are in Houston. --Chuy's...of course. I usually go to the one on Kirby rather than the one on Richmond. And I don't eat there because of their politics. The food is goooooood. Anyone ever tried the Elvis Presley Memorial Combo? Me neither, but I love Combo #1 and the fish tacos. --Ninfa's on Navigation. This is the only one still owned by the Lorenzo family (that's why the food tastes much better here than at the other Ninfas). **Here's a tip for y'all: Ninfa's on Navigation runs a free shuttle to Enron Field during ballgames. Head to Ninfa's on Navigation right after work, have dinner and a couple 0'margaritas, and then take the shuttle to the ballgame. When you're ready for them to pick you up, you call them and they meet you at a streetcorner outside of right field. It is an excellent service.** --Lupe Tortillas. This is my sister's favorite Tex Mex. Good grilled food & fajitas, plus a nice deck for sitting outside with a cold one. --Spanish Flowers. Up in the Heights on N.Main. Open 24 hrs. Good for "after the clubs close" and better food than Andy's, the other 24 hour Tex Mex place in the Heights. --100% Taquito. Accross Hwy 59 from the Compaq Center. Nice, cheap, no-frills & good food. Tex Mex Restaurants that I do not like: Merida, on Navigation across the street from Ninfa's. Went there for lunch last week after my co-workers and I saw a line out the door at Ninfa's. The food was terrible, with absolutely the worst salsa ever made put on the table. The salsa tasted like warm tomato sauce with chili powder added to it. I will never eat there again. Pappasito's, on the Loop near the Dome. The service sucks and the food sucks just as much. The only thing good there are the drinks. I have heard that Little Pappasito's on Richmond near Kirby is good. I may try that one, but I will never eat at regular Pappasito's again. The only Pappas restaurants I ever eat at any more are the original seafood place and their barbecue place. The others stink, IMHO. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker [This message has been edited by RocketMan Tex (edited June 05, 2001).]
You owe me a meal, maybe! Last year, when I was in NYC, I ate at a Mexican place in Greenwich Village called Mi Cocina. It's on Jane St. near Hudson. The food, although I wouldn't call it standard "Tex Mex" was pretty damn good Mexican food, and the margaritas were really good. I would definitely check it out if you are in need of a fix. It's probably one of the closest things to Tex Mex you could get in NYC. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
There is a Tex-Mex place near Washington Square in NYC that is called, incredibly, Senor Swanky's. It is worth going to just for the name, alone. The food is decent, if not up to Texas level. -Elvis! ------------------
We used to LOVE El Paraiso on Fairview, in Houston, until I got deathly ill from eating there! This is why I got sick... When we used to go the waitresses would take the old chips and salsa and put the salsa back in the main container and then re-use the chips! After I saw this on several occasions I just stopped eating there. I never noticed before... who looks at those sort of things, you take it for granted they aren't re-using food. I should've called the city Health Department but never did. We just stopped going. I had some serious intestinal thing from eating there and I was laid out for several days. I know this was from eating salsa or chips after someone didn't wash their hands or were already sick. I do miss that place but prefer to be healthy than eat at that restaurant that is not safe! rH ------------------ visit: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love!
I will report back in a few days! Thanks Tex....he he....get it? Tex! ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
Yes, I know Senor Swanky's. Kind of Noveau Mexican. Its okay; the drinks are good, but, to me, it's kind of like Hollywood trying to do Tex Mex. ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
Can't believe that nobody's brought up -$$Trudy's: 3 Austin locations; Excellent Migas and Fajita combo for only $7.95 and Chicken Chipotle is great too. Also try their enchiladas. Mexican Martinis there will get you pretty messed up. ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater
rockHEAH, That's the beauty of these greasy spoons, lol! Seriously, someone must have already made that call for you. About 3 yrs ago, they stopped using bowls to server salsa. They now use squeeze bottles, and give people clean bowls to pour it into. My feeling has always been that their salsa is the most expensive around. I believe that more now since I have made it myself. I guess they were always trying to save money assuming no one would double dip their chip. mc mark, What about La Jaliscience on Montrose? We used to call it Burrito Heaven and Jellyscience.
Cool. Tell me what you think, and definitely have a margarita! ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
In Austin, the best place I remeber for Mexican food is El Azteca (east side, traditional, not Tex-Mex). Also, El Arroyo (centrally located on 5th) has great margaritas and good Tex-Mex if I recall. Chuys and Baby O's are not bad (OK), Trudy's is bad IMO. In Houston you have better choices (La Mexicana, Orginal Ninfa's or Doneraki's, Cafe Noche, etc.). I am not much of a fan of Pappacitos. I was not impressed with Hula Hut--though I tried the not-Polynesion-like Polynesion food.
"El Taconazo", the best damn taco trailer in Houston! All they sell is Super Delicious Fajita tacos ($1.25) over stuffed with meat (I actually have to take half of the meat out and give it to my dogs) AND Quesadillas (Fajita of course $1.75). I think its open till 4:00 a.m.or so. If you go on a weekend anytime after 6 in the evening you'll see a long ass line. Don't fret though, it moves quick. They have about 5 guys doing the assembly line thing, cutting, cooking, cutting cooked meat, tortilla stuffin' and the last one taking your order...NEXT! They also have the yummiest green salsa ever! If you are going north from downtown (still inside the loop of course) on I-45 exit Patton and take a right, the next light is Cavalcade, take a right. It'll be about 1/4 of a mile down on the right (hmmm, all those rights) and its right next to a Tire Repair shop! I know, the sound of "Taco trailer" seem sleezy, but believe me, this place is super popular because the fajitas are so damn good, I'm not sure what the heck they make them with, but I highly recommend it! ------------------ "Beware the lollipop of mediocrity. In McKinney, Texas there is a place we frequent all the time called San Miguel Grill- they have real Mexican Food @ only 6.50 per plate & Fajitas @ 11.99 (awesome flavor) ------------------ A HOUSTONIAN lost in dallas
WHAT"S THE PLACE!!!! I loved La Jaliscience! Under $20 and could get some excellent food and get nice and toasted on ritas'! And then hit Emo's or Rud's for who knows what! Ah man! "sigh" ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
General Rule of Thumb : If they don't make their own tortillas by hand, its not good Tex-Mex. I need hand-made tortillas, if I don't see hand-made tortillas, I don't eat there. I like a little restaraunt up here in Pflugerville called El Poblanito. Maybe not the greatest Tex-Mex, but its cheap, the service is good, and I love the tortillas. ------------------ "My name is Harold, and I live here all alone"
Austinites, what about El sol y la Luna ? ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." Harry Carey "Norm, if I had a mohawk scalp, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you."
Wonderful topic! Making me miss Houston, though... Good restaurants in Houston (anything I talk about is going to be $-$$): La Jaliscience (or "Burrito Hell" or whatever), Chuy's, Monterey's. Bad restaurants in Houston: Marco's. Good restaurants in Austin: El Azteca, Chuy's. I have not found anything as good as La Jaliscience or Monterey's, especially for the value. Bad restaurants in Austin: El Mercado! OK restaurants in Austin: La Feria, Enchiladas Y Mas. Good just because they're really cheap (Austin): El Patio, La Fuentes. Overpriced in Austin: Baby Acapulco. (Too bad, they used to be my favorite, but the recent price increases have been too much for my wallet.) Good in San Antonio: Alamo Cafe. (and a lot of others, so I hear) And, if anyone ever happens to be passing through Fort Stockton (on their way to Big Bend or El Paso or California...), take the business loop and eat at Bienvenidos. ------------------ Isabel,clutchcity.net lurker since 1996 All your base are belong to Heypartner.
