Hey guys I was trying to compile a list of some awesome Standards from those past and present. I was wondering if you could help by listing your favorites! I will start: Nat King Cole- I wish you love. Frank Sinatra- The way you look tonight.
b*stard! Beat me to it. But other standards of Jazz are cheap shots, illegal screens, and of course flopping. And we all know that you have to be Mormon to enjoy Jazz.
I think this will make you feel better. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uT6WXQp2U_Y&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uT6WXQp2U_Y&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
I don't know if it's a standard but blue in green <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PoPL7BExSQU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PoPL7BExSQU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I tend to think of standards more as the pre-bebop show tunes that were adopted by jazz musicians. Songs composed by Gershwin, Ned Washington, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Rodgers & Hart, etc. But they can include important works from guys like Miles, Charlie Parker, and Coltrane too. Some of my favs to play: Bye Bye Blackbird Have You Met Miss Jones Just Friends There Is No Greater Love I Can't Give You Anything But Love All The Things You Are Stella By Starlight I'll Remember April Dear Old Stockholm Easy to Love My Romance Take the A Train EDIT: I wouldn't really consider Blue in Green a standard just because I never hear anyone else play it. From that album, So What, All Blues and Freddie Freeloader are considered standards.
I'm actually learning this solo right now. Also: Coltrane's Blue Train solo played on recorder. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zz7LvCS1oXM&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zz7LvCS1oXM&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I just broke into the Jazz myself (playing) but loved the vocal standards for a long time. The book that keeps popping up (internet, youtube, peers [I live in Denton: NTU has a great jazz school]) and constantly recommended as an intro to Jazz is the "The Real Book" by Hal Leonard. It's one of those fake books with just the cords and melody line (no words). There are a few artistes not represented (something to do the copy writes), but the majority is there. That book has become my bible for everything jazz in my learnings.
Are you looking for more instrumental standards... or vocal standards? Monk and Mingus are two of my favorite composers, but obviously they did much more instrumental jazz. Goodbye Porkpie Hat Ruby, My Dear Crepuscule with Nellie Nostalgia in Times Square
Listen to Cannonball: he knows what of he speaks. We went to college together, and he's just about the best saxophonist I've had the privilege to listen to live.

This seems as good a place as any. Austin sax legend Tony Campise died early yesterday morning. While at the Texas Jazz Festival in Corpus Christi last October, he slipped and fell in his hotel lobby and suffered serious brain damage. He had been recovering in Austin when he suffered a fatal brain hemmhorage Sunday morning. He used to be the lead alto player for the Stan Kenton Orchestra. When he left Kenton, he resided in Houston for awhile and taught at UH before later moving to Austin. He had also played with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Lyle Lovett and many others and was a true living legend in the Austin jazz scene. I'm grateful to have had the pleasure of playing beside him when I was in college. Here's a clip of him doing the jazz standard "Lush Life" by Billy Strayhorn. <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/P6WmlqGaGXg&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/P6WmlqGaGXg&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
Cannonball, Just called my brother-in-law up in Nap-town (you might know him: Mike Stricklin-Jazz Saxophonist) and his first thought was, "he's still alive?" But he had nothing but good things to say about Tony. Mike had actually played with Tony when they were around the Dallas area. Thanks for the video. Great song...I can still hear Hartman singing it on the Hartman/Coltrane album.
