VY was pretty awesome on Leno tonight. He spoke about his mother and the ladies that raised him. He said his mother said he would either end up dead or in jail if he didn't shape up when he was younger. He's a pretty stand up guy. Will Farell was hilarious...telling him to turn pro. When asked about turning pro and Leno said "Houston has the #1 pick right?" Young shook his head and said that that could play alot into if he turns pro or not. I think Vince would LOVE to play for the Texans. Hometown champion come in to save the Texans. What a story that would be!!
GO BACK TO SCHOOL, VINCE! He did say a big postivie was getting his degree for his himself and his mother.
So, basically, if the Texans say they'll draft him, he'll come out. Otherwise, he won't. I like the guy even more now!
VY will not be #1 pick...most NFL analyst have Reggie Bush with hall of fame talent. VY had a hell of a game, but he isn't worth more then Bush in the NFL at this moment. Maybe if he can do it again against OSU early next year and then win the championship again, continuing to improve (I don't know where he needs to improve), then he could be #1 next year. Only way texans get him is if they decide to trade down to #2 or more likely #3. They know they would be wasting a valuable trade bait taking him at #1.
I'll try to give a good recap the best I can. I'm seriously paraphrasing. Had Mel Kiper on first. - That one game moved Young into the top 3 of the draft with Leinart & Bush. Was originally penciled in around 5th or 6th. - Said GMs liked Young a lot beforehand, but his passing and presence in the pocket last night pushed his value that much higher in their eyes. - Said Bush is a great talent who's versatility makes him a sure fire top pick. Is a 15 carry guy, who will play WR some plays, return kicks. If you have another nice RB, Bush will open everything up for the offense. - Didn't say much else and he didn't say who should or would be picked first, just that last night might throw a pause in Texans' thinking. Then had Dave Harvason for SportRadio610 and some other guy from Dallas: - David talked about how the mood around Houston (about who to draft) changed in 24 hours. - David also talked about that in the Texans' eyes, if they draft Young, it will signify that they are starting completely over. They want to turn it around now and have put in 4 years, and probably a nice extension, into Carr already. - Both basically talked about how the Texan's were always looking at Bush but, just the fact Young is from Houston, might make the Texans think about drafting him. - David also talked about how, if Bush is drafted, people will get over it cause they are both superstar players. - The guy from Dallas concluded the interview (when asked who the Texans should pick) saying they should draft Bush. He is a great talent, compared to everyone from Barry Sanders, Gail Sayers, to Walter Payton. They have invested too much in Carr to start over and Bush is the safe choice.
couple of thoughts: 1. i doubt very seriously bush will be returning kicks in the NFL. particularly if he plays for the texans. jerome. mathis. he'll get 10-15 touches per game, i'd guess...depending on the offense. 2. the "investment in david carr" is not a good enough reason to stay away from drafting vince young. it's just not. 3. take a chance at something extraordinary...something great..something legendary. VY has the potential to have that sort of impact for the HOUSTON texans.
most nfl analysts also had reggie over VY in the Heisman....and then VY made them all feel like dumbasses. sometimes you have to put aside hype, and make the pick that will truly help your team. I'll take VY's leadership on a team that has none(TEXANS), over a highlight reel on a losing team. BRING ON VINCE...TEXAS IS STILL RECOVERING FROM THE LAST BUSH.
1. I'm sure he will be returning punts for Houston and will probably be out there with Mathis returning kicks. Until we have a coach and know what kind of style he's gonig to run, there is no way you can say he's only going to getting 10-15 touches a game, thats just dumb. Bush is the same size as LT when he was drafted, and the same size as Sanders. 2. You're right about the investment part. But you're got going to get a gaurentee that a coach Houston brings in is going to let Vince be Vince. It doesn't seem that there are a lot of 'zone-read' designed offenses in the NFL. I don't see Vince being a behind the center drop-back, type QB, but I could be wrong. 3. I'll go with John Lopez this morning and ask, If Vince played for FSU or any other college out side of Texas, becuase thats how a GM should look at it, would we still be talking about not drafting Bush. If Bush wasn't comming out, I'd say draft Vince, but I think Bush is just too good to pass on.
He's a redshirt junior. He granduates in May 06. He's done all you can do at that level expect win the Heismen....but we all know who the better player is
wes -- 1. i don't think bush will be the incredible difference maker in the NFL that everyone else does. i definitely could be wrong. 2. it's not correct to say, "if he was from FSU, would we be saying this." it's not right for two reasons...first of all, VY showed everyone up. the heisman race was far closer than the vote tally suggested. VY carried his team this season to a national championship. And he's done that sort of thing since he was in high school. I don't think Bush is a better prospect than VY. having said that...Young being from Houston is ENTIRELY relevant. the NFL is still a business. you have an opportunity to scoop up some franchise goodwill here that comes around once in a lifetime. it's the oilers drafting earl. it's the rockets drafting hakeem. these opportunities don't come often.
Texans better hope Young stays in school. If Young comes out and becomes a star, the Texans will become like Rudy -- a joke. Rudy is a great coach but he will always be remembered for passing on Rashard for another white point guard. Can't pin this one on Casserly. I'd rather build around a QB.
the backlash would be far more significant for the texans passing up on young than the rockets passing up on rashard. lots of teams passed up on rashard. and rashard wasn't being touted as the greatest in the country. rashard was a high school player who has turned into a nice NBA starter. VY has the potential to be far more than that. on a franchise desperately seeking an identity, both locally and nationally.
He might not be the no. 1 pick, but as of yesterday, MANY NFL types were ranking the prospects 1. Young 2. Leinart 3. Bush. After a Texas team that had average (but fast) LBs was able to contain Bush the other night, I think that raised a lot of questions of him being an every down guy, especially when Lendale White showed he could take the rock up the middle and make yards when Reggie would just search for the corner and not really ever find it except for once or twice.
Heres some quotes from MANY NFL types • "Young is a great competitor, that's the thing you have to like about him. But be careful about his athleticism. It's a great attribute but he doesn't have Michael Vick's suddenness. He's got real good speed, but it's not world-class speed, and you see what eventually happens to the guys in this league -- they get beat up and they slow down. He is strong for a fairly lean guy. And you have to like his size. But if you do the film cut-ups on just his throws from last night's game, you're going to be fairly unimpressed." • "Leinart's clearly a bright guy. He's got better feet than most people talk about. His arm strength is average. He doesn't throw as many pure spirals as you would like. But he's a big guy, he's played a lot of football in a pro-style offense and he's had a lot of success. He's not going to carry a franchise on his back, but if you put talent around him, he's going to be a good quarterback in the NFL. And let's face it, we need more good quarterbacks." • "If Young's performance did anything, it made a case that he should have won the Heisman, not [Reggie] Bush. But that was splitting hairs. That's not a very good USC defense he faced -- didn't Fresno State put up 40 on them? What I like about Young is that he's gotten better every year as far as throwing the football. He does spin it a lot better than he did before. Arm strength, like Leinart, pretty marginal. He won't have the same success running the ball in the NFL, not even close. But he's a leader, he'll generate some excitement, and then he'll get ripped [by the media and fans] when he doesn't dazzle in the NFL like people think. Still, if I were him, I'd probably come out. He needs a lot of work and he might as well start getting it now." As for Bush, he still projects as the probable No. 1 pick in April's draft by the Houston Texans. "He still did enough Superman stunts to make you say, 'Wow,'" said one personnel man. "There aren't many players who make you go, 'Wow,' so he's got tremendous value to a team. Maybe he's not a 4.2 guy [in the 40] but he's got plenty of juice." Now, USC running back LenDale White had all these guys pretty excited. "That's an NFL back," said one scout. "He's 220 pounds-plus and he will be a big-timer in our league. He won't dazzle, but he's the type of guy with the right team who can win a rushing title and score a lot of touchdowns."
