Are his handlers still planning to waste $500m on his shrine?

Are they denying that it even happened?
"Mark Langdale, president of the George W. Bush Library Foundation, said he didn't know about the Web site being lost and recovered. But, he said, he would know if the library had been stuck with a surprise $35,000 expenditure."

I think he's saying they didn't pay to get it back :

Yuma finally reached a deal to buy the Web address back for $35,000, which the company, not the library foundation, apparently paid, Huger said.

    He's a cybersquatter?

    I hate cybersquatters. Real slimeballs.

I'm surprised he got away with it - I figured it would have been illegal for him to steal it away like that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that since Yuma let it expire, it became fair game. It's not like he created the address. It was out there, the user let it expire, he obtained it.

Cybersquatters, even if they're pissing off people I hate, still deserve to rot.

    Depends...

The Bush Library could have easily won the domain back assuming the term is trademarked - but I suppose it wasn't worth the hassle.

Exactly what is wrong with purchasing something that is put up for sale?

Nothing...unless you have no right to the name or term.

It would be like you purchasing AdidasShoes.com and trying to sell different shoes even though you have no affiliation to Adidas. The term "Adidas" is registered and trademarked and therefore protected against other people using it for their own needs.

GeorgeWBushLibrary.org is no different. The Library could have easily taken this cybersquatter to court and won it back. But I'm sure they were embarrassed they let this domain slip and just wanted to keep things quiet. Also the court procedure is a hassle.

In fact, this action was even more illegal seeing as how it seems this guy's sole purpose to purchase the domain was to re-sell it back to the rightful owner. A big no-no in the domain industry and clearly illegal. If he purchased it in order to develop it for something of his own (I'd have no clue what he could do since the name isn't generic in any way) then that's another story. But he'd basically have no defense.

It's a shame all the news stories portray him as a good guy who has done well...because cybersquatting is a growing scar within the domaining industry.

"If someone owns a domain name that is infringing on your business name or product name..."

Is GWBLibrary a product or a business?

I don't get the hostility from some of you; you must have lost precious domain names somewhere along the way!

I hate it when people buy resources that they have no intention of using. It's like hey jerk, some of us want to use that gold for sweet necklaces, but YOU want to sit on it and wait for it to increase in value then profit off of it!!!!

I'M SO ANGRY I COULD PUKE

I write for a domain industry news site and have seen cybersquatting get out of hand too many times.

With the section you quoted I didn't mean to say he's a bad guy. But what he did was outright wrong and completely illegal...you can't see how his actions were in bad faith?

GWBLibrary doesn't have to be a product or business - it is a protected term since it uses his widely recognized personal name in addition to the domain being registered in bad faith (purchased for the sole reason of reselling it to the rightful buyer - with no intention of using the domain for himself).

I agree with Swoly. It was registered. It lapsed. He bought it fair and square.

    i know what you mean

i hate it so much when dumb people give smart people money.

especially the "not willing to disclose where the hell this money is coming from" Bush foundation, guess thousands of anonymous and possibly sketchy figures are shaking their heads at how much of a waste their "gift" truly was.

I don't think that's what Swoly said. I think he was commenting on the wording of the thread title..."Young man beat Bush..."

Nonetheless, it's not a matter of opinion - it's a matter of actual law. People have done much less and been fined for trademark infringement. What he did was clearly illegal. He got away with it - good for him...but it's actions like his that cause so many stupid lawsuits in the domain industry.

Then it is illegal for the domain company to sell something that is not theirs to sell.
