Time Magazine's Person of the Year the other year was 'You' because of the influence each of us has online. However, anonymous postings without face to face interaction tends to allow a lot more cynicism, snarkyness and complaining because those qualities tend to come by more naturally when you're alone than when you're with other people.

There's no doubt the common theme (and yes, there are posters who are exceptions) is often that if the Rockets' lose, it's because they suck, and if the Rockets win, it's because the other team sucks.

I'm just wondering if that attitude generated from people sniping from their living room laptops is manifesting as a cynical crowd at Toyota Center, resulting in more quiet sneering, less loud cheering, and a pretty sorry home record.

    Partly, if there's any relationship.

I don't know if anyone from Rockets organization reads this BBS or is a part of it.

    Heh, that's an interesting question.

... And one I've sort of wondered about before. I mean I doubt there's any significant correlation, but I dunno.

Pretty sure every other team also has internet fan forums.

Sure they do, but Houston also has one of the largest suburban populations for its size, which means more people connecting spontaneously online than face to face, which leads to more socially inept conversation (I mean, just take a look at the quality of exchange on this board, it's like a bunch of ten year olds thrown in with a thoughtful post now and then), a lot of bickering, heaps of trade so-and-so threads, followed by a general aura of a crowd of fans with their arms crossed the entire game, which of course, is then followed by a lack of emotion by the fans, then a lack of emotion by the players, and a bunch of fourth quarter collapses. A coincidence their road record is stellar compared to home?

Has it affected Rafer's game? You bet it has - I've seen him play with confidence (on the road) and he can really ignite the team, loosen them up. Back home, he makes jokes about how hated he is - and where do you think he gets that from? Where do you think the press gets that from?

All in all, I think there needs to be someone taking a leadership position to set an example of what a true fan is, and that's the kind of fans you have in Seattle (the famous '12th man') for their football games - cheering the team wildly on no matter what. If the fans want to see a winning team the best thing they can do is lift the players' spirits when they're down, not spit on them.

I like Rafer, I think he is an ok point guard and does a very good job running this team.

I love Yao, I think he may be one of the greatest class acts in all of sports history. (for the dummies, I mean his personality)

I love T-mac, though I get frustrated with im because I think he do better if he would just attack the basket instead of settling so often for what the D gives him.

I love Battier, once you take in the Stat of how terrible his Grizzles have been since his trade you can feel pretty darn lucky we got him...(though long term Gay would be great too)

I love Bonzi, this guy has heart! I supported him last year cause I knew what he could bring to the table, and I love that this year he is bringing it and hard!

I love Hayes, even though he cant make a shot to save his life he is a stopper!

I love our rookies with my whole heart. These guys are the future of our team, when Yao is on his decline we can rest assured that Landry will be an All-Star, and maybe Scola too. Brooks? And anyone help me say, Isaiah Thomas?

In short this sounds like a love fest, but that is what it is....I love this game, and I love this team!

If you people here who live in/near Houston represent the home crowd(go to games) then yes cause our home crowd is garbage and it reflects upon all the negativity I've seen on this board since I joined. No passion in the crowd, no fire, no excitement. I don't get that same adrenaline rush I used to feel when watching a Kings game or a Knicks game back in the 90's. It hasn't been the same in Houston since the late 90's.

If depth perception of the arena has anything to do with it we need a renovation and have the arena resemble something like the Alamo Dome. Now that place was loud, even on my old mono sound TV I had back then. Only places as loud were Key Arena, Arco, and Oracle.

seriously if any of the threads/posts here have any sort of effect on the team winning more games at home then this team is going nowhere.

The number one factor in the relatively poor home record I think has been overlooked. T-Mac has missed 8 of our 22 home games, or 36% of them. The one game Yao missed was also a home game.

In home games that Tracy has played in, we're 9-5. And that includes two games where he missed the second half, so adjusting for that you could say we're 9-4 with him. Which means we're 4-4 without him, or after adjusting, 4-5 without him.

After that, then you also have to consider that T-Mac has just played very poorly at home. Maybe he's got some issues at home that distract him or something. I don't really know, but I doubt it has anything to do with criticism on the internet.

Finally, the Toyota Center lower bowl crowds just plain suck.

If this were the case it would effect every team at home. Most teams have critical fans, its how sports works. Basketball is their only chance to focus on the game and forget about the real world.

I think he has better ways to waste his time then reading an insignificant insect's drivel.

    How's that for snarkyness...

What?! I think what the players eat that night before the games have more impact on the win/lose than what people say on this board.

    It's pretty simple...

A lot of the press guys visit these boards to get a pulse of what 'fan nation' is saying. You know they do because they refer to it from time to time, even the players.

One too many 'Trade Rafer, he sucks!' threads, especially because the astute journalists will look at the message count (450 messages on hating Rafer?!, 560 messages in 'Trade T-Mac'?! - wow, a lot of these fans really are disappointed in these guys...), and you'll get side comments in press conferences like, 'Hey Rafer, why do you think there's so much negativity on your game?' 'Hey Tracy, what do you think of all this trade talk by the fans?' I'm sure they're thinking under their breath... "Ungrateful &*%#s..." Who wouldn't.

You think this doesn't affect your game? What if you heard indirectly from whispers that your kids think you suck as a parent, or your significant other or even just your friends, think you should be 'traded'.

What about other cities' fan bases? Houston is not a destination city anything like the cities closest to it in size because it's so sprawled out/focused more on individual living rather than community, and this board reflects it.
However, it can also overcome it.

Quote from McGrady after the Cleveland game: "It was great to get one at home. We treated it like it was a road game."

That's embarrassing. And do the fans take responsibility for providing a lousy home reception? No, they blame McGrady for being an ungrateful &*%#.

    Getting off soapbox now.

I don't need Clutchfans to hate Rafer. ;) Seriously Rafer is hated because he sucks at times on the road and at home. He is inconsistent and the bigger the momment the bigger the suck. I will say he is sucking less lately but it doesn't mean he won't suck in the playoffs. He is choke man and until he proves otherwise I will continue to want him replaced, internet or no internet.

probably the stupidest question i've ever heard...
No offense or anything
Houston still isn't really all that basketball crazed when you compare it with football....
just wait for another five-ten years until the next generation comes up...and then you will see a loud, noisy, packed arena.

I take it you don't use Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube, eBay, Wikipedia, Linux... billion dollar companies created from mere online communities.

With a little concentrated, online-coordinated effort, a group commitment to pick one 'Get Rowdy!' home game to yell at the top of one's lungs (this is a lot more do-able when done with friends, which sounds energizing, not so much alone, which may get annoying) for an entire game, will, I guarantee you, influence the final score in a positive way, if not guarantee a win. At the very least, it'll demonstrate how loud it could get at Toyota Center, raise the bar a little.
