As though we needed another reason...

...to dislike the Post Office. Nice to see that losing $2 billion a year indicates that the executive leadership is meeting its performance goals. That, and their brilliant innovations such as raising the price of stamps twice in a year, or threatening to cancel Saturday deliveries.

U know If the congress was not involved I could see
but to have a CONGRESS MEN .. who vote on
their own raises AND rarely run on budget
get involved with this. . is hypocritical.

I say no raises for Postal Office uppity ups
    or Congress.

Did you hear about the California power company that declared bankruptcy, but is paying it's top executives $17M per year to stay with the company?

Speaking of postal service inefficiencies, USPS recently built a new post office back in Amarillo. For some reason, they built a post office that is smaller than the one it replaces even though the city (and that area of town, specifically) has grown significantly since the building being replaced was built.

As it turns out (according to a reporter I know who spoke with some workers at the post office there), the design for this particular post office was supposedly approved around the mid-80s (when Amarillo was not growing at all), and even though it didn't end up getting built until 1998, the USPS never updated the design.

And the Post Office ended up building another post office with the same design in a larger and faster growing part of town this year (but it does replace a smaller building, though the new building is probably not large enough to even meet the current needs of that part of the city).

USPS infuriates me sometimes, but a lot of this really isn't their fault. Declining revenues due to email is hurting them, and it's very difficult for them to release employees because they're part of the government. That, in turn, makes it more advantageous for people to use FedEx or UPS, which makes the cycle even worse.

USPS needs some major reforms that can only take place on the congressional level. The Saturday delivery threat was meant to scare congress into acting, since their requests weren't being listened to. From what I understand, they were never very serious about it.

Haven, save me the sob story. I know the Post Office has problems. They lost $199 million last year and it looks like they're going to lose another $2 billion this year. Under those circumstances, I think it is disgusting that they're considering rewarding the senior leadership with anything other than an escort out of the building and a pink slip.

All right, it's true! Of course nobody needs mail. What do you
think, you're so clever for figuring that out? But you don't know the half of
what goes on here. So just walk away, Kagy. I beg of you.

sob story? I fail to see the "sob story" in my post. I don't think you're accurately assessing the situation. I'm not sure that you're wrong in your assumption that the post office should be reconfigured to be capable of accountability, but I also don't think it is right now.

And the world's tiniest violin plays on. It's not their fault, they're hurt, they have obstacles to overcome, and they didn't really mean it when they threatened to end service on Saturdays.

The point is that whether there are extenuating circumstances or not, the USPS may pay its "top managers ... up to 25 percent of their salaries" in bonuses.

I am aware that the USPS, in attempting to compete with the private sector, is being eaten alive. That is entirely predictable. What I take issue with is the payout of millions of dollars in bonuses to executive leadership that is making the situation worse instead of better.

The USPS isn't treading water. It's sinking. And I don't think that executive bonuses are the appropriate response.

In the spirit of waiting in line for 30 freaking minutes (and counting) at this insanely inefficient, outrageously outdated institution to pick up some mail, I'm bumping this ancient thread.

    You suck, post office.

Um....Another thing you can blame on W.. To cover up the money being not being put in Government pension plans during the Height of the Iraq War, Bush used money from the Post Office to cover that shortfall (USPS falls under the control of the Executive Branch). This has been the main budgetary problems for the Post Office, which is still trying to recover from this.

They need to eliminate the USPS monopoly on envelopes and allow UPS, FedEx, etc to compete. A plan should be created to downsize and eliminate postal service jobs gradually until it either competes legitimately or just goes away.

To be human about the whole thing, a 10-year timetable would work. Some requirements would have to be put on the others to ensure service to rural and difficult to serve areas.

It is still amazing to me that I can put an envelope in a mailbox and for 44 cents, someone comes to my house, picks it up and delivers it 1500+ miles away, generally in 2 days. I have absolutely no problems with their fees.
