This a short little pde to all you "Playa Hataz" out there.Look as bad as I hate the New York Knicks, all be it a great city and basketball mecca if you will, the Rockets would benefit from Ewings' services. Why you ask?I put it to you like this. When was the last time Houston had a viable center that came in and shook the foundation of the NBA like Yao and not since Dream?None. If you wanna say Cato then go read my article "We've Had Our Share" and then you will see why we need Ewing and have Yao at our disposition. All I'm really tryin to say is get off the bottle of hater-rade and get some sense.Ya'll act like it the end of the world if Van Gundy is coach and Ewing decides to come to Houston and help Yao.Hey the boy will have 3 of the 50 Greatest Players of all time helping him out .What More do you want. The NBA Finals just want walk up to Houston and say hey here's ya championship. It will take some time. What if Yao takes the NBA by storm next season knockoing Shaq off his throne as NBA king and leads the Rockets through to the NBA Finals in the next 5 years and it was because of the knowlegde of Patrick Ewing, what will you say then?Yeah, you will just jump on his bandwagon and say "Patrick this and Patrick that".Dont say what you wont do because we all have jumped on Horry when we thought he was softer than satin. Then all of a sudden outta nowhere he helps Houston win 2 titles.I'm not saying Ewing is the answer to Yao and his game but it would be a welcome sight to behold should Yao blossom into a budding take no mess center.Yea it will happen but whether Ewing is here are not we will see the next great center in the last 15 years. They only come along every so often so be happy that God has blessed Houston to have what they have and are about to get because had it not been for certain situations Houston wouldnt even be in this situation. You never know what a player who is a coach is all about.Everybody talks about Patrick Ewing stint with Washington, look at who was his head coach and the stupid system they ran. They had a player who was once great but inst anymore and a bunch of babies riding the after effects of six chapionships. You tell me was that a good fit.Because I would ather have a core of young players(Houston) than a team with a former champion with a very below par group of players anyday. So dont go crackin the whip yet.You dont pay the salary, though you may attend games by buying tickets, you aint the boss.
I hate the Knicks, I hate Ewing, and I hate the idea that he would ever be a coach here. It just seems sacreligous to me considering there are other "teachers" who have expressed interest in developing Yao as well.
The Rockets shouldn't hire Ewing because Ewing is not the kind of former center the Rockets need teaching Yao. If we are going to hire a center to teach Yao, go out and get Kareem, because that is who Yao should be emulating. This decision has nothing to do with the fact that Ewing played for the Knicks. Having said that, there is nothing wrong with deciding not to hire Ewing simply because of his association with the Knicks. The Knicks were a hated enemy. And Ewing symbolized that group of Knicks more than anyone else. I don't want to see Ewing on the Rockets' bench. Enough said.
Excellent points. Whoever coaches Yao, should have experience in Yao's type of game. Moses Malone was a hardcore banger, very physical. Yao is nothing like this so I am not sure Mo could help him be the player that we wan't him to be. Ewing and Hakeem and a little bit closer to Yao's tyle, yet still much more physically dominating than Yao is at this point. I have seen Ralph Sampson suggested and I actually think he might be the closest fit. Similar height. Similar body types (actually, Stick makes Yao look fat). Both have some moves around the basket yet can take you outside 15-18'. The best comparison though, is in their passing. Ralph was a pretty darn good passer and always saw the court well. Ralph was also not known as a grossly physical player, like Yao. Jabbar might be a good fit too. However, I would wonder if he would have the patience. Aside from the communication problems, Sabonis, once he retires, would be a nice tutor for himm also. Overall, I think it would be wise to stick with a big man who had some decent passing skills and court vision. My vote goes to Sampson if he is interested.
I LOVE HOUSTON AS A CITY BUT THAT DONT MEAN I HAVE TO RIDE THE DUST OF TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS PAST TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD.I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT WHERE HOUSTON GETS A COACH I AM JUST STATING AN OPINION.I HAVE THAT RIGHT AND CAN SAY WHAT I DAMN WELL PLEASE.FOR THAT MATTER I AM A SACRAMENTO KINGS FAN AND PROUD OF IT.JUST BECAUSE I LIVE IN HOUSTON DONT MEAN I HAVE TO RIDE WITH THE ROCKETS.DONT MAKE ME LAUGH
Even if Ewing were a great guy and never played for the Knicks I wouldn't want him as a coach. The guy just isn't that intelligent. Remember his arguement when trying to negotiate with the league on the players' behalf? "Sure, we make alot of money, but we spend alot of money, too." The fact that he is NOT that great a guy and DID play for the Knicks just makes him that much less attractive. The Rox can do much better in finding a mentor for Yao.
You kindly explained yourself your a KINGS FAN not a ROCKETS FAN. You can say any thing you wish to say on these boards as long as it isnt abusive or rude to members and I would back up your right to do so as far as the administrators would let me.
