THE first person convicted of child trafficking in Australia could serve just four years in jail after yesterday confessing to flying her nine-year-old daughter from Thailand to work as a prostitute in her Brisbane brothel.

Queensland Supreme Court judge David Boddice slammed the mother of three as "shocking, despicable and reprehensible" for subjecting her own daughter to acts of "increasing depravity" by paying customers for seven years.

Justice Boddice sentenced the 41-year-old to nine years' jail - with a non-parole period of four years - for 20 offences, including trafficking of children and procuring a child for prostitution.

The court heard the woman set up a massage business out of her home in suburban Runcorn, which soon expanded into prostitution. In 2004, she sent for her daughter, who was living with relatives in Thailand, to join her for a six-week holiday.

The mother, who had had little contact with her daughter before, taught her child how to massage, masturbate and perform oral sex on men.

She forced her daughter to watch her perform these acts and instructed the girl to masturbate her clients.

Prosecutor Todd Fuller said it was possible the girl's grandmother - who accompanied her from Thailand - also had sex with the men during the trip.

Two years later, when the child was 11, her mother permanently moved her to Australia to work full-time as a prostitute in her $100,000-a-year business, boasting to clients she had a "new girl" available.

Initially, the mother was present and participated when the girl sexually serviced men, some of whom were regulars.

As the child aged, she was required to see clients alone. If she protested or if the men complained, her mother would physically discipline her.

"(The) defendant told her she (was) brought to Australia to help pay the bills; if she wanted to be rich, she had to work hard," Mr Fuller said.

"She did deal with her child as a commodity."

While the mother might argue she brought her daughter to Australia for a better life, "the price the child had to pay for (this) opportunity . . . was too great".

In 2011, the girl had a fight with her mother and confided in a family friend, who informed the police.

At least seven of the girl's clients - described in court as "grossly disreputable men" - have been arrested and are being prosecuted either for prostitution or child-sex offences.

The court was told the girl - who is now 18 and living with foster parents - is torn between wondering how her mother could do such a thing and hoping they might one day have a loving mother-daughter relationship.

Child trafficking carries a maximum penalty of 25 years' jail. The prosecution asked for between 14 and 16 years' imprisonment, but Justice Boddice took into consideration the woman's early guilty pleas, her apparent remorse and co-operation with authorities.
