Indeed, I dont think no matter how old Yi is it doesn't matter, we still unknow how old Mutombo is, but he can also continue his basketball career. The most important thing is a player's talent, not age.

I disagree. In the age of guaranteed contracts, knowing the exact age of the player being signed is crucial.

Difference between Yi and Mutumbo is that Mutumbo was a HOF-caliber player who has the defensive fundamentals and height to be able to play somewhat effectively through his 40s. Yi is just your average middle of the line NBA player...problem is, he relies heavily on his athleticism to even be where he is now.

No biggie for the Nets now...21 to 24. But that's gotta to be a consideration in the future, if Yi's lining up free agent suitors or if New Jersey wants to extend him.

The issue is important. If Yi is 24 instead of 21, that would lead many people to believe he doesn't have as much upside.

When will Yi's contract expired? I dont know, but I think he is young enough. if the Nets feel be cheated, they can release yi when the contract ends, I only cant bear China cheated the league.

That also brings up the possibility that Yao might be a couple of years older than his "official" age. :(

While Yi denies it and I suppose he deserves the benefit of the doubt, I can't believe that nobody (least of all Nets fans) seems concerned about it. If proven true it's a huge deal--teams are going to think twice about CBA imports--and his contract will be voided.

I'm glad the Bucks got a quality player for him after Yi strung along their fans all of last summer. I do hope the best for him, though.

In Yao's case is different. Both his parents were famous athletes, so Yao's birth was on newspapers.

Is it possible that Yao lied about his age as well?

Anything is possible but he has never been scrutinized since he has come into the league, whereas Yi's age has always been in doubt even before he was drafted.

There is a huge difference between 24 and 21, if you're trying to project a player's career trajectory.

If the reports are true, and he's three years older than he says it he is, that's just a real embarrassment. I wonder, in Yi's case, if it was done to make him more attractive to NBA teams.

Has there ever been any questions about Yao's age?

Chinese athletes lying about their age? Shocking.

The issue is if it is true (that he was born in 84), he would have been ineligible for draft in 07. Mutombo was an American college athlete, there was no age limitation for him when he got drafted out of college.

A 22/23 yr-old not eligible for the NBA draft

i think you mean to say that, if true, Yi would have been eligible years earlier that the year he made himself available for the NBA draft in 2007.

Like the inexplicable, systemic bias against Yao by NBA refs, Yi's age remains to be one of those unknown unknowns in the NBA.
