OK, here's the deal:

The little lady wants to go out for Valentine's Day. I had a nice romantic menu set up to cook at home (salad nicoise w/fresh tuna steaks, champagne, homemade creme brulee...not bad eh?), but she wants to go out instead.

Many of H-towns finer restaurants set up Valentine's Day special menus. In the process, they also gouge the hell out of you price-wise. I don't mind dropping some cash, but I also don't want to be bent over a rail in the process.

    She prefers Italian food.

My question is this: Anybody know of a nice Houston restaurant, preferably but not neccessarily Italian food, at which to have Valentine's Day dinner for two that won't cost me an arm, a leg AND a testicle????

    Let's have it, you HTowners!

    OK, here's the deal:

"Surprise" her with tickets to the Miami game, and let her go to town at the Italian "restaurant" in Compaq Center. You could even bring your own checkered table cloth to place over your laps.

    just kidding:

my favorite is Damians. It is very romantic, too, and top notch service. The V-Day menu is $60 per person (excluding wine).

    Here's the Valentine's Day menu

Seriously, Damians is worth it. Everytime I go I'll drop $100 with no regrets. So, you are facing $200 probably ($160 with just 2 glasses of wine). But that's a full course meal for both of you. Not bad at that quality for VDay, imo.

Maggiano's on Post Oak has a great ambiance and its truly not that expensive. The portions are quite large as well.

    Range: $30-$40 a person

Grotto's new location on Westheimer and 610 is a bit more, but is a great place to look into.

I think i'm going to do America's......mmmm...Churrasco steak!

There is a place over in NW Houston that my wife and I go to all the time. It's called Pollatos (sp.). VERY good food and service. Pretty romantic atmosphere too.

Now if you want authentic Italian, there is a place over in Stafford at the corner of 59 and Airport. Name of the place escapes me. Very good food and the romantic atmosphere is here too.

let me ask you a question: what do you want to order? The deal with these VDay menus is you are limited in selection. For instance, none of my favs are on the Damians list, but that Lobster Tail/Lump Crabmeat dish is regularly $35, if I remember right, and I'd be down for trying that just once...since dinner is a flat rate.

I'd call any place you are thinking about and have them describe the VDay menu to you today. Make sure if you are going to pay $60/plate that you have *exactly* what you want on that menu, or shop for another VDay menu.

    just my .02 cents

I'd have to second Damians, but it is pricey.....I've heard good things about this place, and it seems reasonable:

I've heard hit and miss stories about Michelangelo's. I've also heard that I need to try Simposio.

Damians is the only one I've actually been to, though, and the others are ones that I've actually heard people talk about.

Nevertheless, for Houston people, www.b4-u-eat.com is a pretty good site for reviews.

    RocketMan Tex,

You woke me up to the need to start calling around. Dude, Michelangelo's is booked for all prime time slots. You're looking at 1 table available at 6pm and 1 at 9pm. You might want to start calling.

Their menu is $45. She'll fax it to you.

Michaelangelo's is a great place for dinner, but their champagne brunch is amazing if you ever get a chance.

I was at a wedding in December that was catered by Michaelangelo's and the food was delicious!

Wow....Its times like this when its great to be single. The only thing I gotta worry about during valentine's day is whether or not the Rockets can beat the Heat.

Lucky you! I'm trying to figure out how I can take my girlfriend out for dinner fast enough to get in line for the Rockets game by 6:30. I'm thinking a 5:00pm dinner might do the trick. I might not be able to celebrate the Steak day mentioned in another thread if I screw this up too much.

$45 just to look at their menu? Wow, these restaurants are expensive... :D

My advice for RocketMan Tex: a gourmet home-cooked meal sounds like a great romantic gesture and a way to keep all your arms, legs, and testicles. That's still a lot of effort to go through and hopefully she will recognize and appreciate that. Why not take her out to a nice restaurant on, say, Thursday or Saturday instead? Some other time close to V-day? Then they'll have their regular menu back, you won't get gouged, and she (hopefully) can't accuse you of being cheap. Good luck!

I agree 100%, and may have to do it anyway if I can't find a good place to go that won't gouge me. But she wants to go out, and I'm letting her call the shots, so we'll see. One way or another, we will have a great Valentines Day. I'm hell-bent to make that happen!

Pole...I reference b4-u-eat all the time. It's a great resource for the HTown foodie!

And yes, I've been to Damien's many times. It is a wonderful place. It's an old fave of my family.

There isn't a better Italian place in Houston then Aldo's Con Amore. Its a nice small house with about 10 dining tables spread about. Standard 5 course meal for $55 a person. I don't know what it will be on Valentines day. Their cheese selection for the first course is easily the best I have ever head. Their steak (even though its an Italian place) is also top notch.

Da Marco is the most highly rated Italian restaurant in Houston, but I thought it was decent.

    Number for Aldo's 713-523-2536
