What the heck is going on here?

Did anyone ever read Snow Crash? I swear this stuff reminds me of the mental scrambling which was central in that book.

    <object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/U1LNzIYUO3E&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/U1LNzIYUO3E&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></object>

Has this happened all through the years and we just never saw it until recently? It sure seems like a recent phenomenon..

It looked to me like he was reading without trying to comprehend what he was reading, and didn't realize for a bit that his teleprompter didn't make any sense. Just a theory.

he was at least getting words close, like he was saying one thing while reading another and mixing them up. Towards the end he seemed to just be completely frazzled. He at least tossed it over well.

that other chick wasnt even close to her words

I like the guy randomly appearing on the screen behind him at 0:38.

That whole episode reminded me of this:

Like the other lady, this is a type of stroke. At least, he's acting in the same way as she was, and that's what happened to her.

If you go to Youtube and read the comments posted with the video :

    ---------------------------------------

It was a scary few moments for Global Toronto reporter Mark McAllister last night, who suffered an on-air medical issue that left him with badly garbled speech. While viewers watched, McAllister attempted to add to a news story on the strife in Libya, but the information he was trying to present about Canadian fighter planes performing missions in the area was nonsensical.

"Thanks to all for More..inquiring about last night," McAllister wrote on his Twitter account Tuesday morning. "Feeling better now after some disorientation live on the air. Following up with doctors today."

Global News released its own statement early Tuesday:

"While on the air during the 6 p.m. News Hour broadcast on Monday, March 21, Global Toronto reporter Mark McAllister suffered a minor medical issue causing him to experience a moment of disorientation. Paramedics were immediately called to the scene, where Mark was fully checked out and is feeling better. As a precaution, Mark will be pursuing this matter with his own doctor.

Mark would like to thank all Global Toronto viewers who have expressed concern for his well-being."

McAllister's episode is a reminder of CBS reporter Serene Branson, whose post-Grammy report was marred by garbled speech. After receiving medical attention, it was revealed a migraine headache was the culprit.

Sounded like some variant of Wernicke's Aphasia.

I buy that Grammy lady had a headache because she was saying mostly gibberish, but anchor guy might have just not prepped and relied too heavily on teleprompeter. Also, presumably these guys have producers yelling in their ear, so maybe he got completely disoriented.

Perhaps like the Redskins cheerleader, it was some kind of extreme, but much more temporary, psychogenic anxiety response. Or, just some time-honored newscaster flame-out technique. A staff of de-facto publicists, no official diagnosis/condition or comments from the doctor, I'm just not buying any of it.

For some reason I'm thinking about the Earl Weaver joke interview clip, it seems like years ago a reporter would just curse his way out of a bad read.

I wonder what the medical issue was. Now I feel kinda bad for laughing when watching it for the first time. Hope he's ok.

I wouldn't spend too much time feeling bad about that...have you ever felt disoriented? At all?? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the guy is probably OK. Exhausted? Maybe. Mind somewhere else? Possibly.

Far be it from me to make light of another human being's health (my flow of sympathy knows no bounds)...but I think he's gonna be OK. If it's more serious than initially thought, I'll be the first (random) person fretting over his well being. I just think this is getting a lot more pub. b/c of the recent incident with the female reporter/anchor.

If there is a medical cause for this, I'm sure we all suffer from it weekly.
