Calling anyone who might know... How do you permanently get rid of programs that load into the taskbar on the lower right hand side of the monitor...right there next to the clock? I've already deleted the startup files in the Programs menu and I can't find the program in the remove program or using Windows explorer. Any suggestions? Thanks.
it should be an option in the individual software. If you look in the preferences, there is usually a checkbox saying "load at startup" or something along those lines.
If you have Windows 98 or beyond, go to start button, click on run and type in msconfig and click ok. Click on the startup tab and it will list all of your startup programs. Just uncheck the ones that you dont want to load. Youll probably have to reboot too.
Nothing yet...It's not a system icon. It's a heart icon and when I right OR left click on it a window opens that has gibberish a list of gibberish lines and in the lower part of the window I can make out control shift i. I tried hitting ctrl sht i, but nothing happened. I can't get any properties nor do I see it in any of the msconfig commands. I know I was able to delete it from the taskbar because I did it once, but when I rebooted, there it was again and I can't remember how I deleted it in the first place. Thanks for the suggestions so far. Keep em coming. I'll keep working on it.
And the program isnt listed in the startup folder OR in the start up tab in msconfig????? Weird. The only other suggestion I have would be do a regedit and do a search for the file name of the program and delete any entries where it shows up. However, if you do not know alot about how to edit a registry, be very careful with regards to deleting stuff. Do you know the name of the program file and if so, are you sure you have the name right?
The problem is that it only appears in that taskbar on the lower right hand side. There are no unfamiliar programs anywhere else....
I remember how I got rid of it...I opened it, ctrl alt del and ended task. Voila...heart is gone. Does that help solve anything?
If its there when your computer starts up, it has to be listed in the startup tab in msconfig. If its not there, my only guess is, its a virus of somesort. I would do a google search on the program name and see if you come up with anything.
I smell an AOL user. Falcons Talon... I think that heart is an AOL thing... AOL favorites or something. Not sure how to turn it off or get rid of it since I don't use them. Maybe someone who does use them can help you...
oh my god, you're right! i just had a flashback to my pains with AOL 2.5 and the stupid heart icon that showed up everywhere. i totally forgot about that! good call DoD!
Regedit is the way to go, just do the following: 1. Go to the start button then click on "Run" 2. Type in "regedit" 3. Go into regedit and go to the following path: My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run CAREFULLY Delete all the registry entries that you don't need in there... Falcon, the control alt delete thing you did only temporary deletes the process, it will pop back up once you reboot your computer, you'll need to go into regedit to delete it permanently from the startup like I showed you.
NO NO NO BAD IDEA!! Editing the registry without the required knowledge to do so is ASKING FOR TROUBLE!! another place to check for the startup type programs is to check the other tabs in msconfig...look for lines that start with "run".. there are other ways..but I havent used Win98 in so long, they slip my memory at the moment..if you are still having the problem later..Ill get you a full list of where programs are auto started when I get home... Please...do not mess with the registry unless you have more knowledge than the normal user..
codell... msconfig is not in Win2k..I dont think it's in XP either..only usable in Win95,98,ME. Finding and stopping startup programs is a lot harder to do in Win2k/XP
Rocket2k is right...you probably shouldn't be doing this... Please be VERY VERY CAREFUL if you want do decide to do this, if you delete the wrong things in there, it might screw up your whole computer. There's actually a way to backup and restore your registry...
Thank you guys so much. For the time being, I'll just ctrl alt del it until I have some time to remove it. Thanks so much!
