Daryl Morey. The supporting cast of this team is just incredible. Two superstars down, backup center has been down, and this is still a competitive team. I would hate to think of what the backups from just three years ago would have pulled off. The complete transformation of the supporting cast in just three years is really mind boggling. AND NO BAD CONTRACTS. Obviously all these guys won't be able to be kept, but I'm enjoying it while it lasts and I have full faith that this guy will keep a good product on the court. If yesterday's game doesn't solidify the opinion he should have been exec of the year, I don't what else can.
Just think how horrible this team was 3-4 years ago when Tracy or Yao weren't on the floor. Now, we may have the best set of role players in the league. I can't think of another team that could battle without their two top players like the Rockets have this year.
Daryl is Great. Les Alexander brought him in to make sure that the Rockets have healthy contracts during a poor econimic time. Many teams have had to go over the luxury to beef up there teams to win. Daryl has kept our team competitive and in contention all while staying under the Luxury Tax. So in a way a game ball should go to Les Alexander as well.
yeah Morey is great and I agree deserves the game ball. Of the players on the court, I'll give it to Battier, his early threes were critical to getting out to a quick start.
I often think about how crucial Morey has been to the current success of the Rockets, and when I see articles about his version of moneyball, it makes me cringe. The reason we are successful using it is because other teams don't. If they all kept the stats that we do or paid attention to the things Morey does, then we wouldn't get the one-sided deals we've been getting. I say we ease up on the public Morey-love.
This supporting cast + a healthy tmac + this years yao - yaos injury= Dominant Team. Meaning, he has put together the pieces for a championship team, we just can't seem to catch a break. Say we lose to the lakers this season, at the very worst all of our young talent just got some serious playoff experience. I think many are viewing this season as the end of this cast of players, I think it is more of just the begining.
first of all that's not true, alot of these teams are starting to use better statistical analysis, Dallas was a pioneer. Secondly, you say he doesn't deserve the praise because he's ahead of the curve. its the exact reason why he does deserve it.
Agreed. Except Artest is a little above a role player. He's not a Kobe or James, but he's not just a role player. He does get double-teams. And Brooks is on his way to being more than a role player. He's had to. He more or less has control of the game's tempo.
It makes you cringe, and yet you're saying we're successful because we do it and the other teams don't. Huh?
I heart Morey, hell anyone with a brain in Houston hearts Darryl Morey. But I just worry that everyone will know how we got such good players in such a short time. I cringe because I don't want that info out there, just like I cringed when I read about Shane's defensive plan against Kobe. I didn't really want that out there either.
That team 2 years ago was built around needing Yao AND T-Mac to carry the scoring load. They were hustlers and defenders and role players, but they couldn't create their own shot and they couldn't really shoot. In addition to Yao and Mac, Morey has kept Battier, Hayes, and Deke. Morey has replaced Rafer, Juwon Howard, Luther Head, and Kirk Snyder with Aaron Brooks, Scola, Lowry, Artest, and Wafer. More post scoring, more shooting, more shot creating, more versatility and without losing the hustle and defense.
Role players can not bring the revenue and win the whole thing. Morey needs to go out and find star players we can build around.
That's exactly right. Our depth was so bad it was brutal. We had scrubs like Ryan Bowen, John Lucas, VSpan, and Scott Padgett. Looking at Morey's moves, he did the following: - 2006: traded #8 pick, Rudy Gay for Shane Battier - 2007: traded VSpan for Luis Scola and Jackie Butler - 2007: drafted Aaron Brooks at #26 overall - 2007: traded future 2nd rounder + cash for rights to draft Carl Landry at #31 overall - 2008: signed Von Wafer - 2008: signed Brent Barry - 2008: traded Donte Greene + future 1st rounder for Ron Artest - 2008: dumped Steve Francis to Memphis and signed Dikembe Mutombo - 2009: traded Rafer Alston for Kyle Lowry and Brian Cook - 2009: signed James "Flight" White
Now imagine what he could pull off if he built his own team. That's why I keep calling for us to rebuild after 2010.
