Don't know if any of you listened today.
Maybe Jim saw the NY Post article, maybe not.
But when I turned on the talk show Rome was going off on Yao's softness. He commented on how tired he looked from playing year round. He also mentioned that China should wise up and save Yao to prove himself and his country on the biggest basketball stage, the NBA. He questioned wether or not Yao would be able to unlearn the nice guy qualities of how he doesnt want to disrespect anyone on the floor by scoring 30+ points a night or make a tiny defender think he's "mean".
He also had a call and email from listeners commenting on this.
I know the caller suggested since Yao is tired from year round B Ball that the other Rockets should be picking up the slack.

I'm sad to say this topic is tip toeing into the national spotlight.

I hate to say it. But if Yao stayed here last summer instead of going back, he should be much more prepared for the double team and hack. JVG and Ewing would tell him way earlier during the summer to tough it up.

The guys on ESPN Fastbreak were also talking about Yao's softness last night and how the Rockets are doing. They also believed that JVG will be able to turn this team around eventually.

I haven't heard much about this but...

Does anyone know if Yao is playing ball after the 2003-2004 NBA season?

    I hope not.

why do you hate to say it? It is the honest truth. If China wants their golden boy to be a formidable player in the nba they will need to let Yao stay in the states over the summer

I hate to say this, but...

Have you ever heard of the Olympics?

Yao will be forced to play harder than ever this Summer...and not in the US!!

How did they go too far with that? He's only scored 30 pts. once in an NBA game, and we lost that game.

It's going to be funny when Yao dominates the US when he plays for China.

Yeah, I agree with Rome when he says China should wise up and not make him play their during his "should be" offseason.

    It's his second freekin' year.

He's young and inexperienced. That's why Rudy was trying to move him along slowly... let him develop like Hakeem.

And they get criticized for that all last year because in this day and age everyone wants instant gratification.

let the team grow dammit... it takes time, water, etc. etc.

I view this year as a year for education and next year as a year of domination...

    take that Jackie Chiles!!!

Maybe...maybe not. But they had to win the Asian Championships in the summer of '03 to qualify for this summers Athens Olympics. Your best case scenario is maybe[/u] the summer of '05. Maybe.

I am not so sure that Yao's softness is due to fatique. Do you think Shaq will be less dominating playing a few games during the summer? I don't think so.

When you are 23, you should be able to play all year long. Playing less won't toughen Yao up. Taking the summer off won't improve Yao's game. Yao needs to grow a pair.

I was listening to the Jim Rome show today and the reason it came up was because Rome was taking calls and someone called from Houston and expressed concern about Yao playing during the summer. The caller said something to the effect of - he wasn't sure if yao was playing poorly because he's physically exhausted from playing during the summer or if he just doesn't have it in his upbringing to be aggressive. At least that's how I remember it. Rome basically just reapeated what the guy said in a lot more words as he is proned to do since he has to fill 3 hours of air time.

I listen to Rome on a daily basis but he was kinda wrong in making fun of Yao in the sense that he said Darko scored 6 points on YAO. I doubt that he watched the game, he probably just looked at the box score cause Yao wasn't in the game when Darko was scoring those points. It was pretty funny though when he was talking about Darko's 0.9 PPG and 0.7 RBG. THat was pretty hilarious.

Why is everyone wetting their pants that Rome was discussing this??? He was stating everything that people in Houston say.
