Does it seem odd, but it seems like he is taking more jump shots and moving away from the paint? I mean he did it before, but it wasn't consistent. But now, within the last month or so, he has been hitting those shots regularly in the 15 to 20 foot range. What do you all think about this? Should he attempt more of these type of shots or should he still be trying to hover around 5 feet and closer range?
I have been saying the same thing. He has been taking that long jump shot the same one Luis and Carl take. I think if he can keep hitting these consistently it will open the paint up for cutters.
The defense is forcing Yao to take those shots. And when he's out on the high post, it opens up lanes for Aaron Brooks to torch the Fakers defense. But Morey pointed out a few weeks ago that Yao's shooting from distance hasn't been that reliable. Scola has been better over the course of the season. But Yao can obviously shoot, and I think he just needed more shots in game time situations to find his touch. Those shots will continue to be there for Yao, so he needs to capitalize.
As a 86% free throw shooter, I am sure he can hit 50% of those mid range shots. Just have to get his timing right and not hesitate.
I've criticized his ability to hit that shot for a long time. But yeah, he's hitting them pretty consistently now. I no longer scream "No, no, no!" when I see him taking those. When defenders start closing out on him for that shot, watch out. Remember what happened when Duncan went to challenge Yao twice? High post pass inside to Scola, FTW.
Usually when AB and Yao run P+R, Yao cuts to the basket. There was a point during the game yesterday where AB pulled Yao aside and talked to him. After that, almost every time Yao didn't cut towards the basket and stayed in the high post. I've always thought having Yao stay high is a really good because AB has to ability to beat his man if the 2nd defender doesn't help, and Yao is a good shot / passer from high post where he can see the whole court (see Spurs game).
He actually was pretty good at hitting those shots earlier in his career, then as his low post game developed he was worse at those shots. I think that Yao is a good shooter overall, so I don't really cringe when he takes1 or 2 of those shots a game. I just don't want him to go overboard. He is much more effective close the basket where he can make a high percentage shot, find an open man, or go to the line.
Yao definitely has the range. All he need is to hit couple big shots and gain confidence. Can't wait to see him hitting more big shots in the upcoming series!
that's because Yao Ming was not forced to shoot jumpers. He shot them within the flow. If he is forced to attempt more jumper than his like, his Fg% will drop. I think Yao is fine as he is. Don't change anything.
I actually think that he should take those shots because most of the time he is wide open as oppose to being in the paint. For the most part he only takes it if the clock runs down.
Yao's always been money from that area....the problem is JVG always said Yao wasn't a good shooter from there, so a lot of fans ran with that and were against Yao shooting from there because of that. However, JVG is all about percentages, so he said that looking at Yao's percentage from that area. The problem with that is Yao's shot from there int he past were mostly after hesitating and/or to beat the shot clock. Those are low % shots for everyone. Now that he actually wants to take them and feels comfortable that others wnat him to as well, there's no hesitation and he gets them off early before the clock runs out.
Nothing new. It just wasn't open to him before. The guy has a green light and he can hit the shot. In fact, I think at this point, There is not other person on the team I'd rather have taking a 15-18ft shot at this point. Just an incredibly efficient scorer.
he pops out when brooks is penetrating because brooks is not good at interior passing, but he is excellent at making the kickout pass...Yao can hit that shotand i dont mind him taking it if its open and its in rythm.
Which begs the question... If Yao can shoot a 3, do you let him? Observation says that Yao will more often than not get a clean clean shot off esp. if he's out by the 3 point line. If he's a 35% shooter, do you let him fire? My hunch tells me, Yao could be a 40% 3 point shooter if allowed to shoot. Pure conjecture and speculation. But when you're that tall, and defenses sag on you when you're that far out, thinking you won't shoot, imho Yao has a very good shot at getting off many clean uncontested shots. So the question is what kind of % can Yao shoot from the 3 during practice shootaround??? Not to say this is the best and highest use of our big man, but I've always been intrigued by this question. Why not let him launch a deep three from time to time??? Wouldn't it be as demoralizing to the opposing team as a massive dunk or successive Deke blocks? theSAGE
Why shoot a low percentage shot when the defense is giving you a high percentage shot? Yao can probably hit that three, but i'd say he's twice as effective shooting the mid range jumper.
he is just getting more freedom from the coaching staff to utilize more of his weapons, something that JVG burried long time ago.
i'm glad he's hitting that shot. I knew he could do it and it was merely a confidence issue. If he proves he can do that well and gets even better at passing the RA system will be in full effect. All other teams better get ready!!!
