Just wanted to get everyone's thought on what you see as Yao's current patent move and/or what he seems to be developing that in a couple years. Hakeem had the shake and fade or mini hook, Shaq has the dunk, Kareem had the sweeping hook...etc. What do you see now and possibley developing.....
Spin hook. He'll probably get the baseline turn-around about as consistent as anything else, with the hook mixed in.
lowering the shoulder, knocking the crap out of the opponent, and dunking. realisticly, he should do what duncan does and face up first and take that easy jumper for 15 feet. Its almost automatic for him and he doesn't have get tired fight for position.
You know rockbox, you bring up a good point...he jump shot from 15 feet is undefendable because he has the high advantage and he can nail it at 50%+...it is really something cool. Remember Hakeem used that 15 footer to, but fadeaway with shake....
Yao's got his own jingle after a good play, that's a start! Yaoooooo Miiinng, Yao Ming, Yao Ming, Yao Ming!
First you are asking him to be the BRUTE player- Shaq . Second you ash him to be the ULTRA Soft finesse player- Duncan. Just let him develop as the first YAO MING.
Tipping/just missing a rebound just kidding... go Yao!! I think it's going to be his step back fadeaway jumpshot
well it's pretty clear it's going to be his 3 move mix-up right? receives ball on one or the other side of the basket. 1. baseline spin to layup or pass 2. spin the other way to the middle of the lay for the hook 3. turnaround fadeaway
What he has right now: 1) Turnaround J. 2) Tight ( for his size) spin to the hoop. 3) C&S 15 footer. 4) Basic body body ball deep post move. What I'd like to see him add/use more: 1) Hook, obviously. 2) Up and under. SOunds silly, I know, at his size, but he gets people to commit so mich off their feet because of his height, and uses the glass well, that a DUncan like up and under, either for the 5 footer off the glass of for the lay in would be astonishingly good, and set up his J better. When he does use it, he almost always hits or gets the whislte. 3) Drop step jam. His size, and with increased strenght, he could take it either way. 4) Face up and drive...only against certain players ( Shaq, for ex.) but those who play him to shoot so much are very vulnerable to this, and he's got good body lean.
His favorite move seems to be the back it in for a few second and then pass it back out move. I can’t really think of any move that is really unique to him. And there’s really not one shot that he makes significantly more often than he does any other shot. His post game is fairly generic. Back it in some and take an ordinary looking turnaround jumper or hook shot. Simple but effective.
It would be interesting to see his shooting percentage on the shanghai shake. It seems like when he shoots that in good rythm it is almost automatic. IMO, it will be a combination of this with his developing jump hook. Both of those moves are unguardable.
Well, I would like him to make the Sky-Hook his favorite shot. I mean really, who's going to be able to block/defend a 7'5" guy that has a deadly accurate _hook shot_?
I like the hook shot too. It's really a beautiful shot that noone in the NBA can really do on a consistent basis. Ya gotta wonder how he learned that from Ewing. I never saw Ewing do that move. Maybe I just didn't watch enough Knicks basketball.
The big men on the team were training on the hook last season. Yao used it last season occassionally. I remember Bill and Calvin (I think) talking about how the rockets used a dummy to use as a defender, one which they could raise to whatever height, to train the guys on putting an arc on their hook shot, rather than the clothesline shot.
Agreed. That was the one shot he had that I always wished Hakeem did better. I'd take Hakeem 100 times out of 100 over Ewing - but Ewing could get that whenever he wanted and it was almost always decent %. It took a really good defender or a bad shooting night to stop it.
