Well, one strong argument one can make is to look at the stats. Let's take a look at how Yao fares against the best big men (Shaq, TD, KG) after his breakout game against Minny at Toyota Center.

    Since then

    Rockets Minny 2:0
    Rockets Lakers 1:1
    Rockets Spurts 0:2

Two of the three wins are blowouts. All three losses we have a chance to win in the 4th, or even within the last two minutes.

And here's Yao's number in these 6 games:

    26 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 58.5% from the field (62-106)

Spectacular number for a second year player in the league.

Yao's main problem is consistency. Also the 3rd tier centers playing him dirty + opposing 4 cheating on Cato do not help. But I guess that Yao is making progress dealing with DT, and the refs are gonna call more fouls in favor of Yao since he has earned some respect from the refs in the league. If we can solve the problem at 4 and get another outstanding shooter (not necessarily trading SF3), Yao can more much more efficient.
