Yao's being very disciplined, he kept the content of their conversation confidential. However he admit LS is using him very differently than what Rudy was doing. He wants to take time to adjust..

To me the question becomes: who should adjust >more<, Yao or LS.

Good interview, give us clues of what's going on b/w Yao and Larry.

Nothing new. We all know that Larry Smith wants everyone to play ISO and Yao is not an ISO player. You see, the tradition of playing ISO is not RudyT's responsibility only. It's the whole coaching team.

Physical != ISO. But most NBA assistant coaches don't know that. RudyT realized the fact after a few games but that's why he is the head coach.

Use this to do machine translation if you are real interested. I know machine translation sucks. that is why only do it if you are real interested.

Some bored Chinese will translate it later, I am sure. So be patient.

    Just translated it for fun:
    ----
With only 31 minutes and 7/30 FG in the last 2 games, there's no doubt that the transition from Rudy to Larry Smith forces Yao Ming into another difficult period. What Yao Ming needs to do is not just face the problem, but try to resolve it proactively.

Yang Yi: A couple days ago, you said you would like to privately talk to Larry Smith. How was it going?

Yao Ming: I don't want to talk about it. You know it a private conversation between Larry and myself. I just want to know him better, and let him understand me better at the same time. Anyway, it's all for the Rockets. You know, I never put my own good ahead of the team, so I decided to be more proactive. Larry Smith is a good guy, he only has a bit of bad temper. There's no problem between us.

Yang Yi: There's no problem between you two personally, but the major difference is probably on the way he coaches. Maybe you have difficulty adjusting to his demand?

Yao Ming: But sometimes you have to force yourself to adjust. I remember that when I was in the national team, Wang Fei once said "Even if the coach was totally wrong, if the whole team follow his way to play and the 5 players having the same thoughts, there's still a chance that it'll turn out right. On the other hand, if you think that the coach is wrong and the 5 players think differently, then the game will definitely be lost." Smith likes to have the center to fight (for position) under the basket. This is certainly not my forte, but I'm trying my best to do it.

Yang Yi: In fact, Smith's strategy gave you many offensive opportunities, but it seems really hard.

Yao Ming: Because there're fewer ball movements in offense, it's been the same in the last few games that they let me go 1-on-1 with the other center. But this is not my forte. The strategy that suits me most is to let me move into the 3-sec area and pass the ball in to me. This way, I'll be able to easily turn around and put the ball into the basket. If you look closely, you'll find out that we have this kind of passing today (against the Nuggets). Too bad my shooting was off today. I think that things need to be communicated. Smith is also thinking about how to utilize my strength.

Yang Yi: But you only played 15 minutes in the last game.

Yao Ming: The reason that I played less minutes today is because of foul trouble. I have 4 fouls not too long into the 3rd quarter. Cato did really well afterwards and we had been controlling the game. So I didn't go back to the court. Smith said that he wanted me to rest and I could totally understand that. The atmosphere in the team today was better than the last 2 games. Smith wasn't shouting like before and actually cracked a smile.

Yang Yi: Do you miss Rudy? Especially now.

Yao Ming: Who doesn't? Didn't you see that our big bro (Francisco) got his sneakers written with "RT"? He had it on his wrist too. I didn't write any because we chinese don't do these things publicly. We keep them in our heart.

Yang Yi: There're only 9 games left in the regular season. Whether or not your team can get into the playoffs, there's going to be a big change in Rockets for the next season. Maybe the coaching team and the core players will be changed too. You're facing an obstacle now, but onceyou get over it, there's probably a big challenge ahead, right?

Yao Ming: We don't know what's going to happen during the summer. But we'll feel the pressure if we think about what you just said. I think during this situation, I'd rather not to think too much about it. Don't you feel tired?

Interesting... this is what everybody was b****ing about Rudy doing, wasn't it? This explains a lot... Yao's still trying to learn how to play a post game. Oh well... I can wait. :)

Please explain what is 'everybody was b****ing about Rudy doing'. Honestly, I don't know what Rudy did that people were b****ing on the context of the interview.

I thought people was b****ing that Rudy can have his players pass the ball to Yao when he is open under the basket (in split seconds). What did I miss? But before Rudy's illness, the guys are improving. The team did the good passing better in some blowout games and poorer in other games.

I'm not sure where you've been, but it was (one of the many) complaints people had about Rudy's system. He was putting Yao out near the 3 point line and having him wait out there instead of getting him the ball in the paint.

thanx ghost for the translation, i always love to hear what yao is saying and how he is feeling and the only true way is in his native tongue.

but what i really liked is how yao avoided a lose-lose question(what did you and mr mean talk about ).

But I read he said '3 sec area', not 3 point line. 3 second area is the paint.

Typo on my part. What I was trying to say is that people were complaining Rudy was turning Yao into another Bullard by planting him outside instead of having him play inside and get the ball down low.

huh? i think yao said he likes getting the ball in the 3-second area, the paint. if people were complaining that rudy made him stand at the 3 pt line then that would be valid b/c it wouldn't be where yao likes it, the paint. of course i thought people complained that yao got the ball down low too much instead of outside. there are just too many damn complaints too keep track of them all.

You know, I was thinking, MAYBE Smith is, in fact, just resting Ming a little a few weeks before the regular season ends?

I mean, no one needs the rest more, and we're hopeless without a decent Yao Ming in the playoffs.

Maybe he's not, but it COULD be a hidden advantage. Especially if Rudy comes back in the least couple of games and plays Ming-style again?

Personally, I think it's good for us and good for Yao. After their chat, there will be a fair balance of Ming's style of play and Larry's style of play.

This is the case for many of our Chinese friends and it has been for a long time now...since just after drafting Yao. Currently, there is enough bashing and short tempers around here...just wait and be patient until it gets translated.

the thing is....not everyone has the time to translate the whole article.... sometimes it takes more than half an hour to finish the whole article, but of course it varies depending on the length of the article.......

so the best thing to do is to wait for one of them(those who knows chinese and English well) to be free to translate it.... if not, just use those translator and make out the story urself from there.....

Hope you are rite. It's nice to see such post from an optimistic Rox fan. Recently I have been tired of all the threads posted by the Yao-only fans and the Yao-haters. Thanks Sane. :)
