According to the following article, Yao will have a surgery on his left ankle on June 15. http://sports.sohu.com/20050611/n225904960.shtml
According to the publicist (Zhang Chi) of Yao's Team, Yao has planned to have the surgery on June 15. On June 7 the doctors had a meeting on the results of Yao's medical exam. On June 9, Yao's Team in US had a meeting and decided to let Yao have the surgery. The date of Yao's return to China is not set yet. Everything depends on Yao's health. Zhang said that Yao would try to go back to China and prepare for the asian cup in September as soon as possible if his health condition permitted it then.
the worst of all possible worlds would be for Yao to have the surgery and then screw up his rehab by playing 39 minutes in a meaningless game against the Kuwaiti national team in between 15 hour bus rides to local shopping malls to make public appearances.
Of course the best of all worlds would be for Yao's rehab to prevent him from playing any matches this summer. I could live with him just lifting weights and working on his shooting while rehabbing that ankle. So we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed.
and to think everyone on the bbs were down on dampier for publicly suggesting yao had a medical issue.
yeah that's what I was going to say but it looks like they're doing this now so that he can play in the all important Asian Games.
Guys, this is good news and a good move from Yao's part. He already had more than a month of rest + training. Now, he's gonna have another month off. Hey, do you guys want to see Yao rehab from surgery or practice with the CNT?
I guess it has been planned carefully. I think that is why DCballer said in the following thread that Yao will stay till mid July. http://bbs06.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=96147
Yao's size and weight has always scared me, due to the history of really tall NBA players having careers cut short by lower-body injuries. Hopefully, this ankle injury is just an isolated case rather than a sign of things to come.
This article also mentions that Yao not only has injuries on his ankle, but also on his knee and both elbows.
Dampier was saying that Yao's medical issue was his stamina and lack of conditioning. Dampier was basically saying he was superior to Yao so he was going to run him into the ground. That obviously didn't happen.
I hope everything goes well. He needs to rest and rehab. Once he is healthy he needs to practice gradually. Playing in the Asian Games is important for him but I really hope he won't have to go. We need a fit and healthy Yao Ming.
Now, the logical next step is for Yao to "misrehab" and "aggrevate" his injury in July. He has to stay in Houston for another "surgery". Oh, let him hang out with Juwon Howard and and tell the media that he got infected with Howard's virus. He won't be able to participate in physical activity for another 3 months. When he recovers, it will be just in time for the NBA training camp...
In a ridiculously short article from ESPN: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2082760 Rockets star likely to have bone spurs removed HOUSTON -- Houston Rockets star Yao Ming may have surgery this summer to remove bone spurs from his left ankle, his agent said. "This is nothing major, the recovery time is pretty short for this type of surgery,'' Yao's agent, Erik Zhang, told KRIV television station in Houston. Yao averaged 18.3 points and 8.4 rebounds during the 2004-05 season.
LOL. That's hilarious. To echo everyone else's sentiments, I'm glad that he gets another month or so of rest.
Cannot believe that no one has posted the translation of this article, which detailed about Yao's upcoming surgery. It does not look good. http://sports.sohu.com/20050613/n225921467.shtml wrote: This Wednesday (June 15), for the first time in his life, Yao Ming will go under the knife on the surgery table at the Fremont Rehbilitation Centre in the suburbs of San Francisco to remove some bone spurs from his left ankle. The doctor that is going to operate on Yao Ming will be his personal physician, a Chinese-American, Dr. Arthur Ding. "Let me tell you. The date of my return to China needs to be postponed again. I will have to go to San Francisco next week to remove some bone spurs from my left ankle." This is what Yao Ming told the reporter in a long-distance phone call from Chicago, 3 hours after Game 1 of the NBA final between Spurs and Pistons. The local time was already 02:00am and Yao Ming had yet to sleep. He had just finished a tele-conference with his manager Erik Zhang Mingji, Keith Jones (Rockets Medical Director), Arthur Ding, and another renowned US orthopedist and made unanimous decision that Yao Ming needs to have the operations on his ankle. Yao Ming said: "I myself felt so sudden and unexpected about the decision. But you know that is after the detail joint consultation and diagnosis of the three experts. Therefore I think I can only comply with their arrangement." According to Yao Ming's own preliminary estimate, if everything goes smooth with the surgery, he would stay at least 2 weeks in San Francisco to convalesce, before heading back to Houston for his rehabilitation program. As to the question (that every fans concern) when he can return to China, he cannot decide now. "The date of my return to China is still an unknown. The most important thing now is how fast I can recover after the surgery. But I want to reassure the Chinese fans that I will return in my best form and shape to rejoin the national team. I will not be absent from the Asian Championship." The bottomline Yao Ming set for his return to the national team is 3 weeks before the commencement of the Asian Championship, and that will be somewhere in mid August. The go-ahead decision for the surgery was so sudden that it had disrupted the travelling/work schedule of Yao Ming. After staying in Chicago for 4 days (NOTE: for shooting a new Gatorade commercial), Yao Ming returned to Houston yesterday to make preparation for his surgery. He will stay 2 more days to recuperate in Houston before flying to San Francisco with his parents to face the very first challenge in his life on the surgery table. "To be frank with you, regarding this surgery, I don't feel comfortable in my heart. This is after all my first surgery, and deep inside, I feel a little bit uneasy and afraid." Yao Ming's left ankle has always been the root of his injury/discomfort; the bone spurs in his left ankle has been the result accumulated in Yao Ming's long professional basketball career. The severity of the bone spurs in his ankle had actually resurfaced towards the end of the playoff series this season. It was about 8 years ago, i.e. 1 year after Yao Ming joint the Shanghai Youth Team, Yao Ming consecutively twisted and wound his left leg twice in training and competition, which had created bone fracture in his toes. "That 2 injuries had given me lots of hardships. But after all, bone fractures did not require surgery. I think there will be elements of risk in every surgery. But I hope even the worst surgery should not affect me playing basketball." Just like all persons that are to go under the knife on a surgery table, Yao Ming is obviously concerned and worried. On his return from Chicago to Houston, he did not go home immediately, but directly drove to Toyota Centre to undergo the last physical therapy on his ankle prior to the surgery. "I already informed Jeff Van Gundy about our surgery decision. He immediately ordered me hands off on all my shooting practices." Yao Ming said regarding this surgery, Jeff Van Gundy showed full support and understanding. Jeff Van Gundy said: "This is the best window for Yao Ming's surgery. I surely don't want to see that he will come to me during the playoff in next season to say he needs a surgery." "The reason why it took more than three weeks after all those Xrays and diagnosis to reach decision for my surgery is because all these three physicians-in-charge live in different cities. A lot of time had been wasted on consolidating their expert opinions. Initally, after the review of my injury report, only Arthur Ding advocated for surgery; Keith Jones and the other expert doctor recommended to continue conservative joint mirror therapy. But after further inspection of my latest Xrays on my left ankle, they discovered that the injury was more severe than they had thought, and therefore they changed their mind and also recommended for surgery." The following is a tally of Yao Ming's current injuries: Bone spurs in the left ankle: The bone spurs here is very severe; the bone and ligament have all shown signs of wear and torn. The bone spurs also caused the ankle to get swollen frequently. Toes: He had the toe bone fracture in CBA, and that had tortured him for years. He had made some simple treatment prior to the Athens Olympics. He mentioned several times about his toes had affected his conditions on court. Knees: He was hard-fouled by Ha Seungjin last season; it now appeared that there are water/fluid in his knee caps and is getting pretty serious. Elbows: His elbow condition is worrisome and serious. Xray diagnosis showed that there are bone fragments in his elbows.
