I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate Kobe Bryant. But he's really, really good. And that's all I have to say about that.

Ron Artest screwed up tonight. He chose to pick a bone with the best player in the world, and as usual, the best player won. Normally I appreciate Ron's passion and will to win. But his passion was misplaced tonight. His focus was squarely placed on the "Ron versus Kobe" matchup, as opposed to the Rockets versus Lakers matchup. And I think it cost his team the game tonight. Many of his shots or reckless drive attempts down the stretch were merely responses to what Kobe had done on the other end of the floor. Ron was playing streetball, when it was anything but. Our All-World center, Yao Ming, returned to the game late in the fourth having shot 7-8 from the floor, and on the next two possessions, Artest missed a three and tried to drive through three defenders, unsuccessfully. Remember those Gatorade commercials, the "anything you can do, I can do better?" ads? Ron had that song playing in his head the entire night. Kobe just played his game, and his game is much better than Ron's game.

Speaking of Yao...what the hell? Nine shots? And the same goes for Scola; he took nine shots, only missed two. Where did our post game go in the second half? Oh - I know. We shot 28 three pointers. And we only made five. Credit the Lakers for playing much better post defense in the second half, but for a team that is without its star center to hold two opposing post players to two or three shot attempts is ludicrous. Rick Adelman's a basketball genius; surely he could have come up with some clever way to get the ball to Yao and Luis. It didn't even look like he made an attempt. This angers me. So the Lakers made a few quick stops in the post when the third quarter began - so what!? You don't just ABANDON the post like Moses. Our best player was, in all ways, absent in the second half; we can't win like that. The only reason the game was even close down the stretch was because of Von Wafer's stellar play. Aside from that, the Rockets blew it.

Speaking of shot attempts...we didn't explore that area very much. We shot 51% from the field, but on only 70 shot attempts (we took 76, but six of those were uncontested layups/prayers at the end). Part of this can be explained by our 23 turnovers. Every player on the team, aside from Carl Landry, who played magnificently, had at least two turnovers. Half of that was good defense by the Lakers, but half of that was just bad decision making. Ron's 6 turnovers were killer, and Yao and Von Wafer each had 4. You can't do that and expect to win a game. It not only gives the other team the ball, but also eliminates an opportunity to score, thus explaining our low number of shot attempts.

The referees were pretty atrocious, but what else can you expect when you play L.A.? I really can't expand on that note, simply because we have all come to accept the fact that when a referee is deciding whom to call a foul on, the call will always favor Kobe Bryant.

While we collapsed in the second half, our first half was excellent. The effort and determination was evident. We were moving the ball quickly, back-cutting to the basket, and getting out on the break. In other words, we did what the Lakers did to us in the second half. Kyle Lowry was an absolute spark for us in the second quarter, as was Von Wafer. If only we had been able to keep up the ball movement...and yet, you had to expect some sort of change after the Lakers gave up a billion points in the paint.

    Huddle up for the recap:

    Three Up:

Luis Landry -- The power forward duo combined for 25 points and 17 rebounds in some hard-fought minutes of work. I was especially impressed by Landry's performance - he was aggressive around the rim, grabbing two offensive rebounds and having multiple dunks or layups. Scola was Scola, going 15/9. It would have been nice to see him get some more shot attempts, but played very well otherwise.

Von Wafer -- Baron Von Wafer was the reason we were in this game at the end. He's our Laker killer (went for 23 against them last time), and his hot shooting down the stretch kept us in the game and gave our other guys a chance to step up. He had 3 steals as well, and his emphatic breakaway dunk, his game-tying three pointer and two key jump shots really got the crowd into the game. Unfortunately, we didn't finish it off for him.

Aaron Brooks -- Aaron played a fine game up until the fourth quarter, when he sat out for a good portion of its beginning. And then he came onto the floor and hit the most clutch three-pointer of his career, sinking one over Derek Fisher while being fouled in the process. Aaron's overall numbers don't stand out, but that shot was incredible.

    Three Down:

Ron Artest -- Ron went Crazy Pills tonight, and it wasn't a good thing. Here comes a Stu Scott impression: "Can a brotha get a jump shot? Dude went 4/16 from the field, and 0-8 from three point land." Or how about when he tried to go for that steal against Kobe? You know, the time when Kobe beat Ron to the ball and nailed a wide open three? "Wha. Wha-wha happened... And then: boo-ya! Kobe makes Artest pay with a three! Holla at a playa when you yada yada yada." In all seriousness, this was not a good game at all for Ron, and he should have recognized that before trying to take over in the fourth. We saw way too much of this:

Shane Battier -- He had about three wide-open looks from three tonight and missed all of them. Thus, he was taken out of the game in favor of Artest, who Kobe torched for 37 points. We could have used his defense tonight, but he shot himself out of the lineup.

Yao Ming -- Yes, he shot well, but he didn't do it enough. He got pounded on the glass in the third quarter and gave up about 4 straight offensive rebounds, all of which turned into points. And his inability to overcome the double-team was a huge blow to our offensive rhythm. He needs to shoot the ball more and figure out how to find some space to get a shot off. I mean, he hasn't taken 20 or more shots in a game since late December!

Well.. I can't say I'm not surprised.. I've always said he needs to take MORE SHATS (lol.. from ex-Toronto Raptors coach Sam Mitchell).. I don't know why we just can't get him more.. We have a really good record when he does take a lot of shots.

i think they're beating the posting up to death. yes he shoots like 60% from there or something like that, but he shoots very well also on short face up jumpers. He needs to somestimes settle for those because they're still good shots for him, better that than turning it over or wasting time and energy fighting for position, only for them to end up swinging it back around because the shot clock is almost at 0.

without a doubt he needs to get up 20 shots a game, the Rockets record is insane when he does.

Who else thinks Yao should have a face up game? I mean if he had one of those type of Duncan-like shots (wing backboard jumper), I think he would be really effective.. I don't know why we never use him with his outside J.

I agree, I've been wanting him to use the glass for years now. Even Hubie Brown said he would be much more effective if he tried to bank up a face up jump shot instead of trying to swish it all the time.

Anyways, Yao should clearly be taking way more shots, but things like double teams restrict him from it.

We have only lost 1 game, when Yao scores over 20 points.

Wow, where you guys been for the past 7 years? Everytime i mention Yao should face up and shoot more I get run out of the thread by people saying at 7-6 he shouldn't be shooting jumpers....I think it's just another weapon for him, sometimes opponents are more scared of that than his post moves. I especially love when he fakes the jumper and when the defender jumps he dribbled right around him for a layup or dunk, but Yao can just let it fly from 10 feet and hit it at 50% or better.

When the Rox won those championships in the mid 90's, it only happened when Hakeem started taking 20 plus, (almost 30) shots every game

Shouldn't have too. Coach is just got work a way to run the offense thru Yao. He doesn't have the stamina to get 30 a game like Hakeem, but 20 is do-able I think

See the thread about not forcefeeding Yao in the 4th.

If you try and go against what the defense is giving you to get Yao 20+ shots I guarantee you that record when Yao shoots 20+ times will begin to go way down.

basketball 101: If they are cheating defensively(meaning doubling before or after the ball comes) then SOMEWHERE else you have an open player and a mismatch waiting to happen. Attack there. Unless you have Hakeem Olajuwon, then just get him the ball and get out of the way....

Yep, not to mention the defense today is much different than the defense in the past.

That's where the jumpers come into play, especially against shorter centers, there's no reason why he can't get those all day over them. Instead of him battling for 5 seconds to get position, then another 3 sec to get the ball to him, then another 4 seconds of him fighting off pesky defenders, then finally going into his post move...that's too much wear and tear on Yao. He needs to have some easy posessions where he just catches, turns and shoots. Plus Scola and Landry are good offensive rebounders and this takes the opposing center away from the rim.

i know 3 pointers are asking too much, but i wish someone would actually record his accuracy from downtown. How many would he hit out of 50 attempts? I'm just curious to know how good of a shooter he really is...

Yao is not quick enough to take 20 shots a game. He never gets one on one coverage. Why do people not see it is not possible for him to take that many shots? He lacks the instinct and the ball handling in the post to be effective. The lack of calls he get doesn't help but Yao is only good if he can take his man one on one. Without a star wing player, Yao is average.

Thing is, his accuracy on the straight up jumpshot is probably in the low 30 range. I remember early on last season he had TONS of free throw line area jumpers and would miss much more than on his turnaround or hooks.

I wouldnt say average, but he might benefit more than say a Dwight Howard or a Big Z or an Andrew Bogut from having a stud wing.

No surprise at all. We have Brooks who can shoot the ball in clutch time. We only need Yao's pick, not his shoot.

first, i wouldnt say he cant do it, because he has. Also, it's not like his career average is very low like 8 shots a game, then that would mean more than doubling his attempts. He shot 17 per like 2 years ago. 3 more isn't going to kill him. Last year he had 15 per. Now he's at only 13, but he's shooting the best % he's had in like 4 years. that's a mixture of getting better quality shots and improvement when it comes to executing his moves. Imagine if he raised it to 20, or even 17 or 18, he doesnt even really need 20 with the extra options we have now.

Nah, i meant 10 feet and in. Although i think the stats for his longer jumpers are low because he often takes those when the clock is winding down or he hesitates and keeps thinking about it and then finally let's it fly, then usually misses. The times he just catches and shoots with time and no hesitation he's money. Back when JCG use to run that play with steve where Yao would pop out for the shot, he shot it well. But now i'm just suggesting 10 feet and in because past 10 feet takes him too far from the rim.

yao do get his fair amount of touches, the thing is he seldom shoots when hes double teamed cuz he usually turns the ball over. stripping the ball off yao is just too easy. i thought at the beginning of the season we would run motion offence to get yao open shots but some reason it just never worked out.

seriously, the best solution for yao's problems is for him to develop a consistent/lethal midrange jumper. when we struggle to get him the ball, run and pick and roll where yao pops out to about 15-18 ft and shoot that jumper. he makes 1-2 and the defense has to adjust and he goes back into the post.

if yao wants more shots, that's where it's gonna happen. yao complained about playing outside last yr, but ironically, that's the only place that might make it easier for him to get touches.
