China's Yao Ming washes hands hourly to avoid SARS

BEIJING - Chinese basketball star Yao Ming, a center for the Houston Rockets, said on Thursday he washed his hands every hour in order to avoid catching the flu-like SARS virus ravaging the world's most populous country.

The 7-foot, 5-inch Yao was in Shanghai ahead of a three-hour celebrity telethon and charity drive on Sunday that is expected to raise millions of dollars for SARS prevention and treatment.

"Personally, I wash my hands every hour and otherwise eat healthy food. I've had less exercise recently but plan to start exercising more," Yao, one of China's biggest cross-over sports and marketing icons, said in a conference call with reporters.

"Regular exercise helps to ensure enough energy and good health, especially under the current circumstances," he said referring to the spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which has killed its first victim in Shanghai.

Yao has just finished his first season with the Rockets, in which he scored 13.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He was edged out by Amare Stoudemire of the Phoenix Suns for the National Basketball Association's rookie of the year award.

im guessing its pretty bad over there. i dont like thinking about yao being exposed to that. its his home, but wouldnt that be horrible if.......im not even going to say it. chances are a million to one but wow would that suck or what.

comparible to when the celts lost their top pick in the late 80's len bias (sp?) to drug overdose. no compensation and a big tragedy. being originally from boston, my dad always talks about how great the celts should have been with him if he hadnt died. was there another high celtics draft pick who died for some reason? i cant remember.
