Yao to claim Sporting News rookie honor By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle Rockets center Yao Ming will be named the Sporting News Rookie of the Year today (Tuesday) after edging NBA Rookie of the Year Amare Stoudemire of the Suns. In a poll of NBA player personnel directors, Yao received 10 votes, Stoudemire seven.
well.. life's unfair. just because suns got in the playoffs doesnt mean amare is better than yao. i cant even still believe that nba made amare ROY. i mean, if they were co's that's great coz amare is worthy of being ROY but yao being not ROY in his stellar rookie season is just plain whack. nba didnt only ripped yao ming, they ripped all of the yao fans, the rockets fans, and the whole asian community.
Without the ROY, Yao has something to prove to everyone else. Hopefully it means he'll start playing harder and better next year.
I'm just not sure the ROY is that big a deal in the long run. It would have been nice for Yao to win but I don't think he's losing any sleep over it. Lot's of players in the Hall of Fame never won ROY.
Funny, when the poll is done with NBA PLAYER PERSONNEL DIRECTORS instead of BIASED NBA Beat Writers the results are different. It is obvious that NBA GMs think highly of Yao as they should have. And this further proves that some NBA Beat Writers (see the 19 that voted Caron Buter ROY in the initial poll) were prejediced in their voting. They will end up eating their pen soon enough anyway.
I disagree. Certainly what matters most is winning championships. No one will deny that. But it is nice to be recognized by your peers and the voting populous for your achievements. Plus it is fun debate!
Winning ROY means nothing really infact, it will help Yao to be a better player next season. Same was said for Olajuwon.
Yao was also on the NBA All-Interview team. but he was only on the 3rd All-Interview team, which i don't understand. Even Michael Olowokandi got more votes than Yao! Did people not notice that Yao got all the attention at the all-star game???
