Just noticed this on espn.com... Will he have Colin on as well, or will Yao be speaking English? Houston has the DP show on tape delay so we'll have to wait till this afternoon. Link to listen on the Internet: http://espnradio.espn.go.com/espnradio/show?showId=1058217
Do the other guys laugh at his jokes too like it was the funniest joke ever? Or is just Moore by himself?
Yao will have a translator (I assume Colin.) Although, did you hear him with Jim Grey after the game last night on SportsCenter? He handled himself very well, Colin only translated one question, but it seemed like Yao understood it correctly himself anyway since he gave the same answer after hearing the translation. I agree Chris Moore is a blowhard, and I can't believe they are cutting the Tony Kornheiser show in March. That's the single-most entertainingshow on radio.
I thought Yao did an excellent job at the game last night using English. If you consider that he had just played 37 of the toughest minutes a center can play in the League, playing against Shaq, he did superbly. I think if he were rested and in a studio, he'd do much better. I hope we see more of Yao using English. Go for it, big guy!
The ESPN guy asks, "Does he understand that everyone is watching when he and Shaq match up?" Dude, he's not r****ded. He just doesn't speak English.
Yao has left for L.A by private airplane. He will attend a ceremony to sign the commercial contract officially with McDonalds . I wonder if he had time to "be on Dan Patrick Show 2:25 ET".
He sure did have time to be on the show. Moore: Who are the toughest ppl to play against other than Shaq? Yao: TD and KG Moore: What is your favorite food at McD's? Yao: French Fries Nothing too revelatory in the interview...
Here's the interview in it's entirety: Yao Ming is McDonald's spokesman now... How excited are you about McDonalds? A new world has opened up for me. How big was last night to you? It increases my confidence a lot. How important is confidence to your game? With confidence I can play more consistently. How have you gotten better since coming to NBA? I understand how to play in the fast pace of the NBA better than I used to. Is it a bigger game when you play against Shaq? There's a little bit of that. Do you know everyone's watching when you play Shaq? Yeah i know. What about the popularity of the NBA in China? Is it important to you? The NBA is very popular. chinese people know heights and averages of many NBA players and are very excited. Are you looking forward to the All-Star game? I hope I can play better than last year. What do you enjoy most about the United States? I like driving fast. What kind of car? BMW 745. Is it big enough? It's big enough. It's nice. what's your favorite food at McDonalds? French Fries Will they name any food after you at McDonalds? I don't know. I don't want to be eaten by anybody. Do you like th unis? I think they're very nice. How optimistic about you about the team in the second half? Do you like playing for JVG? we've had a lot of changes and improved. JVG has brought in things that have allowed us to mature. Other than shaq, who's most difficult to play against? Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett. Do you try and learn from players you play against that you like? I don't learn from just who I like. Who do you learn from that you don't like? I'm not saying I don't like them... They're just not my favorites. will there be more Chinese players coming to the NBA? Yes I think there will be. I know of at least one or two. With these things though, you sometimes have to wait until after the fact. We'll have to wait and see. Can you confirm that life is good? Yes, life is good.
Yes not too much was revealed in this interview beyond the McDonald's contract. I think the language barrier and time constraints, along with the boring questions, kept Yao from being his usual eloquent self. Not to mention, there are always things that will be "Lost in Translation." (No offense to you, Colin.) The one line I did like was when he was asked whether or not they would name some food item after him at McDonalds he said that he wouldn't want to be eaten by anybody. The Dao of Yao.
From what my chinese friends have told me, it's that Pine just doesn't know enough Chinese other than technical translation. He used to translate texts for the US gov. That's good and all, but there's still this lack of true translation. They should have picked a chinese guy that grew up in China and then did high school and college in the states. Or picked and American guy who lived in China for a long time and knew the lingo and stuff.
Man, after everyone plays well against the Lakers last night, the BBS is reduced to Pine-bashing, having no one else to pick on.
